Nicolas Cage is sensational here. Even though he doesn’t have an extensive screen time, he manages to captivate and steal the show in every single scene he is in. But don’t let his amazing performance make you sleep on Maika Monroe’s leading performance as she continues to make her horror filmography a successful one. I found myself unsettled with the film’s disturbing atmosphere and effective psychological horror constantly, while keeping me interested the whole time in the plot. I can see why some people might end up disappointed with the film based on all of the promo and trailers hyping it up. But luckily as I went in without seeing most of those ads, I found myself happy with the final product and I’m excited to see what director Oz Perkins comes up with next.
