After all these years the first Home Alone is still the benchmark when it comes to kids holiday entertainment. I would say it's even better now than when I watched it as a kid. Today I laughed a lot and in the end I cried tears of joy. As a kid, I never cried when I watched Home Alone, maybe because I didn't understand the emotional deepness of the last scene with the old neighbour and his son.
The combination of slapstick and heartwarming scenes is so perfect. The scene in the church is one of the wisest scenes ever included in a movie for children. The following attempt of burglary is well-timed, brilliantly crafted and hilariously played. But the pacing of the whole movie is awesome. Never got bored.
Of course, as a kid, I didn't know, who these two burglars were, that get their asses kicked. But today I think it was an extremely good idea to cast the same actor, who cracked a skull with a vice in Goodfellas the exact same year. Joe Pesci is so much fun. So is Daniel Stern.
But obviously, the movie would be nothing without Macaulay Culkin. This career-defining performance is both sweet and devilish, but in a not nerve-wrecking way. It's so hard to find child actors or roles that doesn't suck. Chris Columbus did and directed one of his two perfect movies (the other one is Mrs. Doubtfire, in my opinion).
Love it with all my heart! One of the movies I cannot watch in English because the German voices set free so much childhood memories.
