In the mid- to late 1990s, a series of action films hit the cinemas that defined typical 90s action cinema. Blockbusters like "Bad Boys", "The Rock" and "Face/Off" thrilled action fans worldwide. Even the end of the world was threatened in the late nineties sci-fi blockbuster "Armageddon". "Con Air" by the directorial debutant Simon West ran in the same waters as the above-mentioned films. If it says blockbuster on it, it's blockbuster on it. That's what the successful producer of these films, Jerry Bruckheimer, had in mind back then. Nowadays, you can't say that about every new actioner. The recipe for action success back then was as simple as it was effective: modern, fast and effectively staged riot cinema with a pinch of humour and an ironic undertone. And this still works perfectly today, especially in "Con Air". Who cares about the lack of profundity and substance when the hero of the film, the one and only Nicolas Cage in his heyday, has his mane of splendour waved in the wind with a radiant smile and almost outplays superstars like John Cusack and John Malkovich like a hummingbird in the great Cageian overacting style?
Rude lines, a great ensemble of actors, a simple no-brainer story that works amazingly well here, wonderful humour, entertaining action. Yes, "Con Air" is still great fun today!
