I’m sorry to say Nicolas Cage didn’t come home with me at night to devour me in my sleep and spit my bones on a plate; but indeed he disappears into this unspeakable monster, only the voice could give him away, because everything else… And bewildering work from the makeup department, it’s like watching the most deranged and aged-out porcelain doll come to life.
Soon after kicking in it’s hinted at that Agent Harker might have psychic abilities; Perkins’s nightmare doesn’t run out of logic by then, and it’s not a miracle. What could be a cop-out builds up the anxiety for a far darker mystery, tailor-made for fans of the Angel Heart/Cure/Empty Man subgenre (my favorite subgenre), that deals with a nation obsessed with… birthdays. The nerve this script has, to masquerade every piece of exposition with a flow of precise dates to add unnecessary confusion to the puzzle, what a thrill.
Maika shows a lot of restraint in building a very stern person, clearly on the spectrum; it’s another home run for the final girl of our time, and one that has us wishing she could be given more shots outside of genre. She’s a master in control, control of herself, she never overdoes it.
And a hurrah for the production design, that goes mid-90s in January so hard, so hard, that they nail it to the point of showing the house of a religious hoarder; straight out Medical Detectives, the sound design fucks hard here with the jump scares, but the interiors are the ultimate hook for eeriness all the time.
