Adding to the Shocktober-abetted spike of recent praise - this is a major discovery. Starts off like a number of garrulous post-Clerks credit card indies before nimbly escalating into Demonlover/Red Rooms territory, all while retaining the ‘cursed object dredged up from a waterlogged storage space’ aura that makes the best SOV films so hypnagogic and bewitching. Almost hard to believe its modest origins as essentially a proof-of-concept project for Richard Laymon’s oeuvre as a viable cinematic property, but then everything that’s good here can be chalked up to agility and resourcefulness rather than calculation.
