A Tale of Two Elliots
My Old Ass made me feel like an old ass! I can’t get my head around at how we're at the stage of seeing millennial nostalgia explode on the big screen. Anyway, let’s put aside my impending midlife crisis, as My Old Ass was a fun, short ’n sweet time.
If you had the chance, what would you tell your younger self? I honestly have no clue what I would say, but Older Elliot (Aubrey Plaza) has a few ideas here. I love how Younger Elliot (Maisy Stella) actually takes it in and grows over the course of summer. Also I chuckled at the random hints Older Elliot gave about the future, and Plaza’s deadpan delivery is at full effect here.
What do you mean you’re not allowed to have three children…? 😳
I love how they don’t over-explain the timey-wimey connection between the two Elliots. It could’ve ended up as a convoluted time-travel puddle, but it makes it a shroomy one instead. Wise! I’m glad it focused on its emotional beats instead. Do we need to suspend our belief? Yes. Does it still manage to hit a meaningful note? Yes.
Oh boy, I did not expect to tear up like that at the end. Maybe it’s because I’m closer to Plaza’s age than Stella’s, so it hit a little harder. Time and youth are fleeting, but that doesn’t mean we should live like we’re fleeting.
