My Old Ass is a sweet coming-of-age movie. Megan Park’s eagerness to craft an authentic Gen Z movie was evident, and I think she succeeded. The dialogue and characters seemed genuine and didn’t create an undesirable caricature of the young audience she sought to represent. Unfortunately, even though I’m technically part of Generation Z as I missed the millennial cutoff by little over a year, Park’s attempt to reach zoomers didn’t always resonate with my old ass (seriously these new age teen movies are starting to make me feel old). However, one theme of the film truly shined towards the end in a way that can be appreciated by all, and it’s something I really needed in light of recent life events. Even though bad things might lie ahead, it’s important to embrace and cherish those who you love regardless of what the future holds. Pain and loss are inevitable. Don’t let their eventuality stand in your way of experiencing happiness!
