What Beetlejuice Beetlejuice lacks in pure unadulterated originality it makes up for with exuberant enthusiasm. It’s madcap and silly and delights in its madcap silliness just as I did. I had a goofy grin plastered to my face the majority of the runtime.
Ryder and O’Hara give the standout performances and mostly glow whenever their own screen. The decision to make Lydia the character she is was almost daring. It also felt realistic and honest in a way I didn’t expect. O’Hara simply gets better with time. She’s a marvel.
Keeton’s reprisal of the ghost with the most isn’t as unhinged as I was hoping, and that may just be on me. He slips back into the vertically striped suit with ease. He’s whimsically vile, smarmy and mischievous. He’s also a bit more mature, restrained and weary in his own way. It’s one of my all time favorite character from one of my favorite actors. Big shoes. High expectations. Yada yada. He was really good and that’s good enough.
Ortega was given the most restrained role and the most grounded. She’s typically the most magnetic presence on the screen but here it’s not the case. Understandable when surrounded by icons. She’s the skeptic and square. She’s grounded in reality but not the reality of Burton’s playground. Being the daughter of Lydia Deetz she deserved to be a bit more bizarre and macabre.
The effects were delightful as was the color palette and much of the set design. It was a really good blend of practical and cgi.
The needle drops somehow surprised me. At first I was suspicious of them then recalled that the use of ‘Day-O’ was one of the best of all time and trusted where the drops happened and thoroughly enjoyed the ride.
Frankly, this movie is a blast. I had a ton of fun seeing it with a crowd. It seemed to please young and old. Topnto bottom this was a breath of, recycled, yet still fresh air.
I look forward to seeing it again.
