wait…what?
oh, right. nothing matters.
Recommended repeatedly by the Pure Cinema Podcast I finally watched this gem and couldn’t be happier. Released in ‘81 this is 100% a 70s film.
Killer cast. Oppressive surroundings. Heck of a script. Walter Hill doesn’t get enough credit. That dude directed some kick ass movies and this might be at the top.
This is a film whose threads are felt in bigger and more famous films, in particular Platoon and Aliens. Deliverance comparisons are inevitable, but this is its own…
I first watched this on a dubbed VHS copy lent to me by a professor. I’m sure I watched it on my old 27” TV/VCR combo.
In truth I probably had a similar reaction watching now in 4K glory is I did then. A quizzical brow. Mouth slightly agape. Not entirely certain what I’ve watched but acknowledging its originality and its brilliance.
One of the true cult films, it’s been called the original midnight movie. The “I saw it” buttons…
It’s a tale as old as Hollywood. The casting couch.
It’s gross.
There are some legit body horror moments.
It takes a few interesting turns but I can’t say it really breaks new ground on any level.

The stars are for the tremendous swing taken by this film.
I didn’t actually care for much of the film. I sat in total admiration of the sheer audacity for 3/4 of the runtime but (queue broken record) it went on and on and on. Compressed in 90-100min and I might have loved it.
The really odd song/dance numbers were entertaining and It’s an original story told in an original way. Big pluses.
In the end, I didn’t really care…
This is the story of a child with a misshapen skull and alopecia who suffers from religious delusions. His fervor affects the girl who loves him; she stands by and supports him until it is clear that she may lose important moments of her life by abiding his zealotry.
Ultimately, the futility of his religious faith is made readily apparent and is demonstrated to all until he is left cold and shivering on the ground surrounded by autumnal gourds. His…
Epic! Old school, big scale, sprawling story telling by master visual story-teller.
Pitch perfect performances. Grand vistas. Immersive effects. It earns every second.
