Thief 1981
During the pandemic I went down a deep dive of crime films, especially from Mann, Melville, and Dassin.
After listening to the commentary for Thief, I was fascinated by the level of detail Mann brought to the script. “Based on a book called, The Home Invaders by Frank Hohimer”, I had to track it down. Unfortunately, out of print since the mid-eighties and the only copy still around was a used copy going for $300+. Out of my price range.…

Speed Racer 2008
Incredibly ambitious, yet it's easy to see why audiences were turned off upon its release. The movie works on anime logic, something Scott Pilgrim vs The World would more coherently execute two years later.
The framing and editing are a delight, but the clashing colors and constant green screen leaves the world feeling too artificial (something the Star Wars prequels suffered from).

Everything Everywhere All at Once 2022
There was a great podcast interview last year with Edgar Wright and Quentin Tarantino discussing their favorite moments in a movie theater.
Quentin talked about what it was like seeing The Matrix opening night when no one knew what they were about to watch. He described walking out of the theater knowing movies would never be the same from that point forward.

Last Night in Soho 2021
Yikes.
Edgar Wright is one of the most talented directors of his generation, but the quality of his screenplays are entirely dependent on who he’s writing with. With that in mind, this might actually be the worst script of his career. It’s messy, tone-deaf, and honestly feels wrong-headed at parts.
But again, the direction is on point.
The music is great.
And although they aren’t given much to work with, the acting is stellar. Anya lends her charisma to a role that feels beneath her post-Queen’s Gambit.Overall, I really wanted to love this, but can only recommend it if you’re already a fan of Wright’s.
