A sincere thank you to Netflix for setting up what ended up being an entirely empty screening in a movie theater, because this is probably my favorite movie of the year. It’s civil asset forfeiture RAMBO, for fucks sake, but also so much more, like a good old fashioned western about a corrupt town
Also, a sincere fuck you to Netflix for not releasing this in theaters and their entire anti-cinema business model in general. So much fun in a theater and it was just me and the projectionist, who told me afterward he’s now watched it 4 times. We were hooting and hollering!
It couldn’t be more perfectly calibrated for crowd-pleasing thrills; heart-pounding tension and just pure adrenaline that we’ve come to expect from Saulnier. It just starts and doesn’t quit with one of the best opening scenes in recent memory.
If there’s a more satisfying movie released this year, I haven’t seen it, and I’ve kind’ve made it my unpaid job to see them!
