It's only been a couple of years since we got a new Spider-man, and one that was actually very good as well. I remember lots of people getting excited because Sony had finally let Marvel have Spidey back. And with good reason after the shit show that was Amazing Spider-man 2. But we can consider ourselves lucky that they still kept hold of the reigns, because dare I say it? Into the Spider-Verse is the best Spider-man film yet!
In all the build up to this movie, I was not sold. The animation style and the story in general didn't do it for me, and if anything put me off. But having read nothing but good things I thought I'd give it a go. I'm glad I did. After a couple of minutes I was used to the animation style (it does feel like there's frames missing and the blurred backgrounds took some adjustment), and pretty much in love with the visuals. It's a genuine surprise that this is a Sony Animation film as usually they churn out some right crap, but this film is breath of fresh air. Its exhilarating and not being part of any bigger universe other than Spider-man means its not limited in what it could do or driven by an overall climax ten films down the line.
I don't doubt that we've not seen the last of this new wave of dimension shifting Spider-folk, and it'll be a real treat if we get another Spider-man film with Miles as the lead, but I am unsure it could reach the high bar that this film has set.
The voice acting in this is sublime with some inspired casting. The soundtrack is a belter and all, easily one of the best of the year. I may be so bold as to say that this may have trumped Coco for my favourite animated film this year.
