A tale told in silhouttes certainly challenges our preconcieved ideas on cinema, the very notions of perception and representation that 100+ years of streamlining has made us take for granted; THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED may just be a kids' movie, albeit aesthetically fascinating, but what it really is a testiment to is film culture, which obviously was alive and well in the 1920s. As these awful so called "rules" were not set in stone, to the same degree as…

Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans 1927
I admit to being a bit of an essentialist when it comes to movies. I don't view movies as roundabout or circumstantial, nor do I think they are particularily plastic or dynamic; they're not frivolous, pointless objects without meaning and I don't really submit to the notion that they "change". What's in the movie is in the movie. It is what it is. In much the same way, when I watch a movie it's not happening inside of me (even…

The Big Boss Part II 1976
This typical Brucesploitation spinoff (with one of the clones, Lo Lieh) was very difficult to watch for a very long time and after all this time you wish you could just bury it again. The movie is just incredibly longwinded and inept in almost every respect, from the incompetently told anti-story to the flat action scenes. Take a chance on any other kung fu movie and it will probably be more worth watching than this one, although many will of course pounce on it as soon as they can. (I did too).

Lights of New York 1928
The first real talkie – The Jazz Singer was mostly silent – is perhaps (or maybe not) worth seeing for that reason alone. A mushy, thin story about a country boy who opens a barbershop in the big city and gets into trouble with gangsters. Creaky, stiff and far from memorable, but still surprisingly forgotten considering that it is no worse than many other early sound films, has a cast with some golden era-thatguys like Helene Costello, Wheeler Oakman and…

Catching up with Bergman 16/20
Elliot: Hi. I'm Elliot Gould. Is this a Bergman movie? It seems I'm in Sweden.
Bibi: Oh, yes hello, we're two Swedish actors who have worked with Ingmar for more than twenty years, let's speak English for a while
E: Okay, um. Here's a line for you, Bibi: I love you
B: You do?
E: Yes
B: I probably love you too
E: That's fine.
B: I mean I'm not sure. I'm pregnant?
E: Sorry,…
