Upfront, it’s important that you know that the big evil in this film is demonic clay. Yes, clay. I never thought in my life that that would be a sentence I’d write, but here we are. And you know what the real shocker is, it’s kind of great. It’s low budget creative insanity, art school students vs evil material body-horror bizarreness. It’s a bit silly, but also a but jaw-dropping and, not exactly bloody because…clay, but pretty gross all the same.
If you can accept that there is cute gore, this is it! Inventive. Silly. Very low budget AND so much fun!! We get a death by protractor (so angular!); a man birthing a playdoh Golem (see, babies are not so easy dudes); and a monster that earned last place in the middle school art fair. Gotta say tho, I smiled nonstop through this schlock.
I came for the vampire clay creatures, but stayed for the bizarre, grotesque clay body horror that this turned into. This is absurd, and totally wacky, and I dug it. The final 20 minutes weren't as strong, but the ending was fantastic. Memorable special effects in this unique little horror film. Definitely recommended if you're looking for something a bit different. The Japanese always come up with the craziest stuff, and vampire clay is no exception.
Watched during my Summer of J-Horror.
Incredibly weird and wacky special effects work make this worth the look. And truthfully, I was pretty engaged with the plot and characters, simple as they were, for a while. But eventually it becomes obviously more about the effects, of course, and the structure of the finale makes the pacing feel off in the last stretch. The ending is also absolutely goofy, but this is still pretty cute overall.
Went on a deep dive through Tubi and found this. Goofy clay-tastic body horror that I didn't expect to actually be good.
Golazo.
This is a rare comedy-horror that manages to be silly and shocking at the same time. It achieves that by having an incredibly daft villain - sentient modelling clay - that nevertheless wreaks all kinds of gruesome deaths and mutilations upon its victims.
It's set in a sculpture class run by a woman who's not an especially great teacher, and she knows it. She's disappointed in her students for not producing good work, and in herself for not being able to improve them. But one student's clay is different, and (no surprises given the movie's title), once it gets a drop or two of blood on it, it comes to hungry, homicidal life.
You get your money's worth of horror…
⚠️ Attention!!! ⚠️
The Clay that has been kneaded for Ages has Finally decided to take Revenge!!!
A Bag of Clay is found buried in the Ground at a Rural Art-School.
What no one knows is that this Clay is Cursed and soon after begins to Absorb the Talented and not so Talented Students.
Now You probably Think I'm kidding you, but no, that's actually the Story.
And as Absurd as the Film is, it's also Entertaining.
So if you're in the Mood for a Crazy and Gory Critique of the WORLD OF ART and don't want to Think too much, I can Highly Recommend the Film.
Come for the scathing criticism of the art world, stay for the monstrous and insane clay creatures.
Gal running an art class outside of Tokyo digs up a bag full of dried clay on the property while cleaning. One of her students, freshly back from an art program in Tokyo, decides to rehydrate and use the clay. Things start going amiss, and the students assume it's jealousy amongst their ranks, but soon find out it's a malevolent lump of clay out for blood.
The stop motion clay creatures were seriously where it's at! Distressing and creepy, I loved it a lot! The ending scene was truly something to behold and uncertain how they're going to go from that to a sequel but apparently there's another one of these.
You gotta be tough to be an artist in Japan!
Awesome special effects in a decent story. I loved how the film feels like a real low budget affair, with a small group of actors all in one location. I also like how the country art school resented those big city Tokyo artists for having more money and opportunities. It really felt like it was the mission statement of the film itself, this no budgeter trying to show they can go their own way without having to copy those big productions.
I can see returning to this film as a fun romp with lots of great eye candy.
