  There are 95 reviews for this film on Letterboxd as I write my own [10 YEARS LATER: There are now 16,000], and roughly 95% of them, judging from a quick skim, include the word "fun" somewhere. And it is enormously fun, which is distinct from being funny. Though it's often that, too. What really struck me this time, though, is how deftly constructed it is, especially (GET OFF MY LAWN!) compared to today's studio genre fare. Each scene builds on the one before, presenting our heroes with a new crisis that negates their solution to the previous crisis; sources of vibration like the little girl's pogo stick and Walter's malfunctioning cooler are set up well in advance without looking…

  It's too easy to ascribe this film's success to its enthusiasm with which it gives shape to its tribute to the B-style monster movie. If we did that we would be remiss in acknowledging the fact that this film is extremely well made and has a script approaching perfection.

  Pacing is paramount in films like this and this script's exposition and build up to its finale is pitch perfect. There just isn't any lag or static at all, providing non stop entertainment fuelled by crisp dialogue, fantastic action sequences and a host of tremendous characters.

  If there is one thing I respond to immediately in a film, its when I notice that its makers are not only out to entertain…

  Still one of the most indelible movie monsters ever (I honestly can't think of one as good since), realized by some delightful special effects (I'm especially fond of the seamless miniature hand puppet work). And like the graboids this is fast as hell and constantly pulls the ground right out from under you, just endless inventive momentum.

  It’s very easy for a movie to engage the eyes and the ears. It’s much harder to engage the nose. I like how Tremors does that by having the characters constantly talk about how putrid these monsters smells. It’s adds a lovely, nauseating atmosphere to the picture.

  Tremors takes that 50’s sci-fi monster flick style and plops it right into 1990... hitting all the beats while never taking itself to seriously—the siege narrative, being isolated from the outside world, and tension via a monster that you don’t see right away while delivering the goods with gross graboid goo, a great mix of action/horror/comedy, and two dopey idiot hero leads.

  Revisiting this feels like opening a gateway to many a late night watches with friends during the 90’s... blown out on stolen parental unit booze, cheap skunk spliffs, or desperate for a thrill whippets like the little stoner jabronies that we were. Happy to report it still plays like gangbusters with a group... and nobody even needed to huff glue!

  Anyways, Tremors holds the distinction of being the first vhs tape I wore out—Critters followed.
