In which Bay hijacks a ludicrously expensive, mediocre toy commercial with a solid family blockbuster base by Spielberg and instead teaches millions of 10-year-olds the visual vocabulary of violent, racist military action movies. Still so funny to me that this was literally only conceived because Hasbro felt GI joe would be considered too controversial with the Iraq war under way and then greenlit Bay turning their children's space robots movie into one of the most jingoistic disaster movies of the Bush era. What's even funnier is that it's one of the better ones, operating on a level of visual sophistication only matched by how monumentally stupid it is. In other words: a perfect merging of material and maker. The soundtrack includes Linkin Park, Goo Goo Dolls, The Used, Smashing Pumpkins, Taking Back Sunday and Disturbed. We have to go back.

It's odd to return to the (relative) simplicity of Transformers after The Last Knight, which was so bursting at the seams that it inadvertently caused Bumblebee to exist. In comparing the 2007 film to even the first couple sequels, this is a mild Michael Bay scrambling of a Spielbergian concept. It's still batshit crazy - from the post-9/11 distrust of the Iraq War, the Decepticons stealing American secrets, the hilarious 'ding-dong' portrayal of George W. Bush with his red socks - but rooted in a calmer structure, a less toxic overview, and more traditional set-pieces.
