Frankly, I debated a lot about this film. It's something that Netflix clearly assembled in the afterglow of their Oscar win, perhaps in an effort to re-promote the short or to encourage viewers to watch the even shorter segments.
I debated whether it should count among Wes Anderson's feature film filmography. I debated whether this should be a 2023 film or ranked for 2024 and how those arbitrary release technicalities complicates my obsessive list-keeping, largely wishing Netflix strung it together shortly after they all dropped in September. I debated when I should watch it, whether I should wait a little bit longer, having just rewatched The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar a week ago before I knew what this would…
Ya, the ordering of the stories based on their settings, the framing device, and the added voice-over at the end make me feel more sure that this was initially meant to be formatted as an anthology. I really love this and think it's a great addition into the filmography of someone who is at such an exciting period of their career. I hope Cumberbatch and Patel continue to work with Anderson.
overall a good set of wes shorts/movies. can never complain about getting content from him.
80/100
Second viewing (effectively; first time repackaged as a feature), last seen on 23 October. Anderson's formal approach is more or less identical across the tales, and pure delight as far as I'm concerned, so I'll reserve that applause for later and first briefly address each one individually, focusing on them as stories; the singular point of the project is that they've been adapted almost literally word-for-word (albeit with some condensation and the occasional amendment), hence the original text is where the variability fundamentally lies.
(Rest of the review, along with everything else I write, available via ultra-cheap subscription. Seriously, it’s as little as $1 a month and for now that pays my rent.)
yeah i enjoyed these collection of short films... the direction and production of every single wes andersom films i have seen has been nothing but an extravagant and beautiful thing. while watching the wonderful story of henry sugar and three more i felt like i was watching a broadway play with live audiences behind me which i thought was great and i watched the films in it seperate thing not in just one thing. my favourite story from these collection of short film was the first one cause it actually had a story and a background and it was more entertaining to watch compared to the other three. dev patel was my favourite actor who was a part of this…
Best thing Wes has made in years, I love Henry Sugar and Poison but Ratcatcher and Swan are pretty weak.
Tough one to rate. The execution is obviously dazzling, but to what end? The point of anthologies - the Italian ones of the 60s, or recent horror anthologies - is usually stylistic diversity, different directors doing variations on a single theme or similar material. Even when the Coens did Buster Scruggs, a rare case of single (or double)-director anthology (I also know Robert Enrico's Au coeur de la vie, are there others?), they made the stories play against each other by changing up the style, all the while keeping a through-line thematically (in that case Death, including e.g. the 'death' of the land through mining, with the final story tying the whole thing together); Enrico also had a through-line, namely…
