Representation in art is a boring subject imo, and it's too bad that this becomes a film largely about itself (viz. the line where depicting a disfigured protagonist shades into exploitation). Like the man (a.k.a. Clint Eastwood) said: "Deserve's got nothin' to do with it". There's actually an extra twist of the knife in this ingenious moral quandary: its noir models - films like Double Indemnity and Scandal Sheet, where the investigator keeps trying to hide his own involvement in the crime - hinge on having committed some moral slip, the implication being that 'the truth shall set you free', coming clean (getting what you quote-unquote deserve) is painful but good…
