You'd have a bad case of crippling depression, class envy, and generalized existential angst and blame it on ghosts too if you had all the money you'd ever need but, like, no electricity and fifty empty bedrooms. These people aren't haunted, they're fucking bored.
If an Oscar nominee releases a new movie at the end of August and no one goes to see it, does it make a sound?

Holy cow!! This was BAD. There were few moments of terror. The pace was murderously slow. Charlotte Rampling was good. Even though I've seen Ruth Wilson in quite a few films by now, she was really winning me over in the beginning of the film. The writing was totally WTF and the bookended voice over was blah and uninteresting. Most of the doctor's points were not careworthy. I was genuinely interested in what was going to happen until it did. And then I was like... UM, NO.

That's it, that's enough Netflix for the weekend. I'm going back to rewatching stuff that is worthy of my time like this sophisticated gem of a comedy. I love that poop so much you guys.
This felt like it was 3 hours long. It had a nice atmosphere, and I liked the final moments, but the build-up was pretty non-existent thanks to the consistently drab tone with only a few interesting events. Every once in a while I’d be treated to some captivating cinematography or sound mixing, but those moments were few and far between.

Given the family dynamics presented on screen, as well as some of the themes under the surface, it’s not surprising that Lenny Abrahamson decided to follow up ROOM with The Little Stranger. Nor is it surprising that the complex, methodically paced narrative, along with the fact that it’s a gothic drama that was badly mismarketed as a horror, caused the film to have the divisive reactions that it had, though I’m quite baffled that critics can call The Little Stranger “boring” and “dull” when they literally just made Darkest Hour into a major awards contender last year. The Little Stranger does two things absurdly well. One is creating an maintaining a consistent atmosphere; the other is managing to make a methodically paced story completely engrossing. At no point did I find my mind wandering, though invariably, many reactions to the film will contain the words "boring" and "dull," and the marketing as a thriller does the film no favors in that regard. Though, I'm willing to bet that most people who find this boring would also find reading a 300 page book to be an impossible task.
Abrahamson is at the top of his game here. He's always been especially skilled with actors (the acting is astounding here, across the board), but I found his skill lacking…
Never before have I seen a film that is so beautiful, yet completely bland and aimless. The production design, makeup, costumes, and acting are all great, but the screenplay is absolutely tone deaf.
What should’ve been [and was advertised as] a gothic haunted house horror film was actually just a period romance with a couple horror sequences that go otherwise unexplored. This was such a disappointment considering this is from the same director as Room. Come on, Lenny.
The direction & screenplay aren’t the best, but the performances & visuals save the film.
