  Part of Dastardly Difficult December: film nr.46

  Dearly beloved,

  We are gathered here today to lament the career of Mr. Nicolas Cage. After a long sickbed, suffering from Ghost Rideritis, Trespassyfilis and a host of other madness inducing bouts of mediocrity, Stolen has finally finished it off. It is dead as a doornail and can finally find its much deserved rest in the afterlife where only his good films are shown.

  Stolen.
  Because 'Taken' was taken...by Taken.
  & What's stolen in Stolen?
  Cage's batsh!t character...& the spotlight (kinda)...by Josh Lucas.
  Who actually is quite fabulous in the role of 'Vince', but it's impossible to watch this film & not thirst for what we all know Cage would've done with the character.

  All in all, though, Stolen is definitely fun! Sure, Danny Huston & Malin Åkerman are restrained in their roles, but based on the opening credits sequence & the score that both predate their time by roughly 17yrs, I suspect Simon West knew exactly what he was doing.

  Back to that score - omg, it's fkn laughably weird. Like Mission Impossible…

  You know those movies where Nicolas Cage is a fucking pro at something but has struggling relations with friends and family? In this one he is a pro at robbing banks, so that's what he does, because of his struggling relations with old friends and family.

  It almost feels like a sequel to Gone in 60 Seconds, the one where he's a pro at stealing cars. Stolen is a decent movie. It's nothing special in any way, but it has a good tempo, and it has Nicolas fucking Cage. That's obviously the best part about it.

  The worst part about it is the villain, played by Josh Lucas. It's just an embarrassing character that totally spoils the movie, which is…

  The music that opens the movie sounds like James Bond meets John Carpenter meets Fart Trumpets (all the puff and blow coming from Mark Isham's bum hole). It ranks up there as one of the worst movie scores i've ever heard and it becomes a gag in itself whenever the bumbastic gunge interrupts a scene.

  I won't claim that Stolen is a good movie, but there's something inherently likable about a movie whose villain is a one-legged, slang-talking white guy from Nawlins, and whose motive for revenge is stated thusly: "You destroyed the only thing I truly loved...me." This is the reunion of Nicolas Cage and his Con Air director Simon West, and while it's neither as hilarious nor bombastic as that one, it's pretty damn funny. Weird as it might be to say, there's a kind of purity to what West does; I believe he wants to make silly, entirely unpretentious action movies just like these, and on that point, he succeeds.   Reveling in its own sense of remarkable badness, Simon West's "Stolen" is a ridiculous mix of questionable acting, nonsensical narrative beats, and foolish storytelling. Starring Nicolas Cage as an ex-con searching for his daughter, the film, somehow, is almost fun to watch; and, either despite or because of its unavoidable lousiness, the whole thing is almost engaging.

  After a job goes bad, Cage's former thief is imprisoned, released and finds himself in hot water with members of his old gang. "Stolen" revolves around that hot water and those upon whom it splashes. With his daughter kidnapped, Cage's character must work with friends and enemies to ensure her safety.

  Nic Cage and Simon West’s reunion following Con Air is a much smaller movie but similarly finds Cage on the wrong side of the law and trying to get back to his baby girl (who is now 15) — relatively dull, as far as these things go, but Cage does Cage well (his recent comments about not phoning in performances is truly apt) and it’s worth watching to see him face off with Josh Lucas wearing a metal leg and prosthetic fingers (after he cut his own off for some weird reason); could have been much worse
