Super cool movie that I kept hearing about via numerous comparisons of what it’s like... except I didn’t really find it to be as derivative as most people seem to, and underneath that crunchy candy coated shell of familiarity there was quite the nifty story here with depth and super solid performances that felt... refreshing?

It’s rare to find myself so far on the opposite end of the fence compared to a lot of critics. Sputnik is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, has semi-positive reviews on Letterboxd, and it seems to be a well-liked film for the most part, but it did not hit me in the way that it hit others. Except for classic Soviet cinema, I have not given myself the task of watching contemporary Russian cinema. Moreover, it is not for lack of opportunities, because even when the cinemas opened in my country, the movie listing contained almost 70% of movies from this country ... and I believe one of these was Sputnik.
Finally, after months of ignoring this movie, I gave it a try after a few people gave it a thumbs up, referencing Stranger Things -- a show I am a huge fan of. An alien creating a symbiotic relationship with a human is a cool premise which was executed well for the first half. Unfortunately the whole storyline gets bogged down in melodrama and I really felt its almost two hour runtime by the final act.
This was pretty damn refreshing. Solid cast, cool monster, and a tight little story with some nice insight into ambition and heroism.
But I have a theory...
I think what’s happening here is that we’ve all been stranded in the desert for so long we’re starting to drink the windshield wiper fluid just to keep going and we’re thinking, “You know, this stuff ain’t half bad,” but when we eventually get out of this mess, and the water is flowing again, we’ll all look back and wonder how the hell we survived on such noxious liquid.

Raumfahrer kehrt zurück aus dem All, ist aber nicht allein, denn er hat insgeheim eine Kreaturrrrüähh....gähn.
Aber halt! „Sputnik“ hat tatsächlich einen eigenen Kniff, der - letzten Endes keinen echten Unterschied macht. Statt saftigem Horror nötigt die hölzerne Prämisse dem Drehbuch leider überwiegenden Leerlauf ab, in dem sich die Charaktere lieber gegenseitig nen Knödel ans Ohr labern statt schreiend durch viel zu enge Gänge zu rennen. „Sputnik“ hat seine Momente, schon weil er weitaus fähiger inszeniert ist als die üblichen Russland-CGI-Exporte, aber so richtig aus dem Knick kommt der Film nie, weil weder der Creature Horror noch die Aussage wirklich zünden wollen.
Egor Abramenko mixt sich aus „Species“ und „Arrival“ seinen eigenen "Moscow Space Mule". Das sieht dann anhand diverser Bilder, Kulissen und einer immer wieder grau-grünen bis gelb-braunen Farb-Palette nicht nur so aus wie Villeneuves Kommunikations-Thriller, es nimmt sich auch einige Zeit, um genauso ruhig, unaufgeregt, überlegt, wissenschaftlich und menschlich zu wirken. Der vermutlich größte Kritikpunkt an "Sputnik", denn gefühlte 20 Minuten in diesem Sci-Fi-Horror-Drama sind dann entweder doch nicht so notwendig oder doch nicht so hilfreich. Was umso bedauerlicher ist, da hier eine doch spannende Frage zum Thema Verantwortung aufgezogen, aber nun mal nicht abgeschlossen wird. Und da ich gen Ende einige Aktionen eben nicht ganz greifen oder nachvollziehen konnte. So kreist „Sputnik“ dann doch nicht in der selben Umlaufbahn…
