This had the potential to be on a 'Kaminey' level, but could not. But that doesn't mean it's not an amazing interconnected movie. Loved the plot. Reliving Saibo was a bit nostalgic.
Also, replace Tusshar Kapoor and his over the top shitty acting with someone good and this movie comes out perfect.
A small-time goon who has an existential crisis after reading Paulo Coehlo – this character was one of the many things that made me rave about Shor in the City when it released in 2010. Tilak, played by Tushhar Kapoor, lives on the border of criminal and lower middle-class. He is a proud book pirate but has friends who steal, deal in guns and even try to rob a bank. But after reading Coehlo, his view of life changes. In a hilarious scene, he even tries to explain Coehlo’s philosophy to his buddies Mandook and Ramesh. They look stumped. All they want to do is get rich quick.
Shor in the City was the second feature made by director Raj…
Shor in the City has a lot of trademark Raj & DK humor, settings and eccentricities that the director duo would go on to master in their future projects. Here it is unpolished and a bit hit and miss.
I just wished that it had a bit more chaotic energy and craziness to it, because the film just slacks in the middle. Could have also given the women in the story a bit more to do.
Throughout the entire movie, there were some really great concepts and narrative techniques used. It was a lot of fun.I think the film's message—that you have to get your hands dirty if you want to survive in a city—is extremely unconventional.
The only good part of living in Mumbai is that sometimes you see a particular location on screen and you can point to your TV and say "Oh I know that place," like you're Rick Dalton from OUATIH or something.
The jokes often don't land well - if only some of them were written a little better. That being said the situational comedy, albeit quite dark, was engaging to stay invested enough in the story.
What does land incredibly well is the relationship between Tilak and his wife. The scenes are great, the music apt and you just root for them. I was left wishing that we should have had more of her on screen. There are points where the cinematography is interesting and that's always a fresh breath of air.
It's a nice movie about small criminals in a nefarious city, but not a great one.
