Some bark, zero bite. In 2024, there has to be someone out there not named Mike Flanagan that can direct a proper King adaptation.
Can we just give Stephen King adaptations to Mike Flanagan, please? Because clearly he's the only one who understands the necessary vibes and how to put compelling characters on screen.
This thing desperately wants people to believe it’s a Mike Flanagan product. And that’s ok, because the spooky atmosphere and vintage Stephen King vibes are definitely there, but the whole story is completely stripped of the book’s themes and turned into more of a straightforward action-heavy vampire infestation flick with a pretty underwhelming ending (despite the back half getting a little fun & frisky). Not unwatchable and surely passable enough for this time of year…but yeah, just go throw on the Tobe Hooper version instead.
Extra half star because the finale is actually pretty good but otherwise this is another frustrating example of how King should be a slam dunk to adapt into something interesting/fun but continues to be low hanging fruit for studios. I think the ultimate killer here is that even when these things are rated R they don’t really feel like they’re made for adults. It’s completely unchallenging, glossy digital streaming fare. Recommend watching Tobe Hooper’s take from 1979 or Midnight Mass instead.
this might be the first and only time i’ll ever say this, but… this probably would’ve worked better as a miniseries.
this is my favorite stephen king book, and i think that’s maybe why i’m being a little harsh. but all of the slow buildup and the gradual deterioration of the town just does not work when it is this condensed. in the book we get a couple of hundred pages between the first kill to the whole town being turned, whereas in the movie this happens in less than 45 minutes :/
i really liked some parts of this film, and i will happily rewatch if a director’s cut is released!
I'm confused on why they always think about checking and fighting the vampires at around 6 pm when the sun is about to set lol
"This is some shit"
Weird choice to turn Ben into a side character.
This moves from MAJOR plot point to MAJOR plot point with absolutely nothing in between, no joke, there is zero substance here. There's no set up/build up, there's no time spent with characters, there's no mystery, the Marsten house has lost its entire menacing punch, Straker is non-existent, Barlow is shown off FAR too early, its dead in the water when it comes to atmosphere and there's no respect for the source material. The thing that makes Salems Lot (Hoopers movie and King's book) so effective is its amazing fleshed out characters, detailed storytelling and its looming evil that is rich in spooky atmosphere and takes its…
Stephen King-core 70s vibes but with 2020s effects, filters and Lewis Pullman? Yes, yes, yes…and…YES!!
