We are currently witnessing something staggering and horrific: COVID-19 and its ravaging of nursing homes. In the U.S., it has accounted for 43% of deaths linked to the virus; in Canada, 81%; in Britain, the total could hit more than half. “There were horror stories about elderly people being found dead in their homes well after the fact – neglected and forgotten, their children in distant towns, their bodies starting to deteriorate. I could think of nothing more heartbreaking,” recounts Relic’s writer-director, Natalie Erika James. This statement comes from an experience she had visiting her grandmother’s town, a place very different now to what she remembers from her youth. This builds part of the story of her feature debut. But…
👵 : This house seems unfamiliar.
Nana, you had dementia ofc it's unfamiliar 💀
It's quite creepy. It ain't like fucking Hereditary at all (since ppl seemingly compared these two whole time😪) it's much slower, much haunting and has unique storyline. But it doesn't have any moments where you're cowering in fear. It wants to haunt you, not terrorize you. A lot like Oculus ig. But yea I highkey recommend it for y'all horror junkie out there!
Also why the heck this movie was that dark?? What was the reason??? I-
I thought this was mostly pretty boring and went exactly where I expected it to, but I am endlessly amused by the fact that the one group it is still apparently ok to make scary and gross is the olds.
When you get old and suffer from Alzheimer's or dementia, you lose your memory, your ability to think, and your control over bodily functions. In a way, you become a different person. That's what RELIC tries to explore: the terror of realizing that someone who you've known and loved your entire life has become a stranger.
It's a fairly efficient movie, landing its central metaphor and then GTFO. But what I appreciate most about it is its texture. Felt like very little CG was used. Instead, the director opts for rich production design with locations that feel old and lived in, plus some pretty impressive "creature" effects.
As a debut film, this is a staggering achievement.
2020 Releases Ranked-HERE
In Relic, first time director Natalie Erika James does a great job at creating an incredibly eerie atmosphere for much of the runtime, however, Relic is hampered with pace problems and feels genuinely boring for the majority of the runtime as it doesn’t feel scary at all. Emily Mortimer, Robyn Nevin and Bella Heathcote all give great performances throughout and can feel genuinely emotional at points in time but yet they do feel quite limited given the lack of good dialogue throughout. With all this being said, Relic does shine for the final 20 minutes and begun to really interest me but sadly it was too little too late as by then the film had ended.

I was NOT prepared for this movie. It just left me so... sad. Went in blind, had no idea this was going to be an entire allegory for something that happens often in real life. Yes, it sometimes falls into horror clichés, but that doesn't take away from the message. Smart horror addressing real life issues, just the way I like it.
almost succeeds in being a really really good reflection of loss and neglect, using memories as its major vehicle, but falls short due to the poor decision to conclude with an obviously placed cat and mouse chase, which almost renders the incredibly bleak atmosphere so well built up over the previous hour too far gone and empty.
"Gran...Gran...Gran?...Gran?...Gran?" - Everyone in this movie.

This film mooooves slooooooooowleeeeeeeeeeeeeee while doing nothing of significance. I've already forgotten it.
The more I think about Relic, the more I like it.
This atmospheric slow burn Australian horror is so thematically rich. I definitely can see it dividing people based on their expectations. I loved its location and decaying production design. There is some really great imagery that gets highlighted through awesome direction and cinematography. The acting is great across the board but for me the stand out is Robyn Nevin. She is asked to do some weird things and she pulls them off effortlessly.
As for flaws, I think the second act dragged a bit but it’s not something I’m super bothered about because the first two acts build and build upon itself with its family drama leading to a…
Without a doubt, Relic is my favorite 2020 movie and here´s why.
I´ve seen a lot of horror movies through my entire life and none of them would stand a chance to this movie because of how real and heartbreaking it is. This film explores dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in a very creepy & realistic way. The way Natalie Erika James (director) portrays this illness and shows how one of or main characters is slowly losing her mind until there´s nothing left requires skills that she sure has.
Here´s the emotional catch…If you know someone with this condition, you´ll be able to identify and be empathic with our main characters, you connect with them, with their pain and confusion, making this…
