Ever felt like your job is intrusive, alienating, and tearing you and your loved ones apart? Or that your mind and body are just another tool in our corporate hellscape? Well, Cronenberg Jr. here has a pretty nasty and fleshy lo-fi cyberpunk literalization of that experience. Maybe falls back a bit too hard on vague, indie-arthouse droning when it doesn't know where else to go with an idea but it has a good sense of mood and I was very into the psychological melding/fracturing sequences and sudden bursts of gore. If nothing else he's got the internal-as-external gruesome "tearing" part locked down.

an extremely elaborate game of among us if you think about it

I've been too busy to add any info/comments to my entries as of late. But I have to take a moment to write that although I still have many 2020 films to watch, it'll be hard to beat POSSESSOR - UNCUT as my fave film of the year. Incredible filmmaking.
Rented on iTunes.
(Make sure you are getting the UNCUT version)

I VAPED & NOW I'M INSIDE CHRISTOPHER ABBOTT??? NOT CLICKBAIT!!

A queasy and intriguing horror-inflected techno-thriller that gets lost somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle between “Mandy,” “Inception,” and “Ghost in the Shell,” Brandon Cronenberg’s “Possessor” is so drunk on its own sick potential that it doesn’t have the time (or the balance) required to realize most of it. On the other hand, 90 minutes of Andrea Riseborough and Christopher Abbott engaging in ultra-gory psychic warfare over control of the latter’s body is more satisfying than what most of the current Best Picture nominees have to offer, so maybe it’s wise not to look a gift horse in the mouth.
Although set in an alternate 2008 that’s a touch more analog than our own world (a low-key tweak that imagines what…

Dehumanizing techno ultra violence for the working human. Cubicle life in 2020, filled with painful bloodletting, melting faces, and tense moments of self doubt while dying for someone else’s dream.
I thought about this movie endlessly since first watching it, as I wake up every day to fulfilling the richest man on the planets devious business while punching in for 12 hour shifts at a intrusive life possessing slave labor job that has infected me like a face hugger. That’s how I relate to this movie and it’s characters holding on to a shred of empathy as simple as remembering that killing a butterfly made them feel something. When I decided to get a better job and stop living paycheck to paycheck…

Very satisfyingly gnarly, as you've probably heard. Lots of jumping off points for ideas that don't really get explored in favor of (some excellent) shocks.

Impressive, immersive, and fucked in a way that never pushes the viewer too far away. Reminded me more of Andrzej Żuławski than Cronenberg's father—severe, hysterical, and humorless. None of dad's dark, kitschy humor, and the practical viscera is bold, bright, and psychedelically deployed. Still, the obsession with body invasion, possession, mental disease wrought from technology—a chip off the old block. Can't think of many young filmmakers who work with such precision. Also love the direction Christopher Abbott has taken his career, working with extremist auteurs who want to shatter his beauty by emotionally and physically torturing his characters. Highly recommend if you enjoy films that scoop out your guts by the end.
