It’s hard to describe what I’m feeling right now. It’s almost 5am after our 9:45pm premiere at Sundance as I write this. Tonight was truly a once in a lifetime experience that I’ll carry with me to my final breath. I got to reminisce over a year later on the highs and low of our filmmaking journey tonight with the cast and crew. Nearly all of them had not seen it yet (and with this being my 18th time), seeing their joy, tears, and smiles as we gathered at the front of the theater for the Q&A and congratulated one another was honestly way more than I could have ever expected. I loved seeing our cast and crew experience the…
sundance film festival 2024 (virtual) #2
A neon soaked crime thriller with a intersex character at its helm. wow. an incredibly moving film about self discovery, grief gender and acceptance. It feels like a fever dream, it’s also very humorous at times. river gallo is such an amazing actor and writer. this film may have its flaws but the end result makes up for it. there is a scene between river & indya moore that’s going to be talked about for a long time it gave me goosebumps. I have to say dylan o’brien and victoria pedretti portray the typical new jerseyan quite well. very interesting seeing dylan take on a role like this he killed it. My favorite of sundance so far!!
Sundance 2024
A neon-noir crime thriller that has Ponyboi, an intersex sex worker, on the run when a client keels over. Operating out of a laundromat run by Vinnie, a hyper-sleazy Dylan O’brien, Ponyboi resorts to stealing Vinnie’s cash stash, hops across grimy Jersey truckstops, motels and pharmacies, trying to find a way to get out of town. Writer/director/star River Gallo draws a lot from personal experience and it’s this insight into the intersex experience that the film shines brightest. The crime thriller elements are otherwise fairly generic and not very well fleshed out. There’s also a b-storyline where Ponyboi has recently discovered that their estranged father is on his deathbed and has been reaching out for contact. We’re treated to…
Victoria Pedretti doing her best impersonation of Riley Keough in “Zola” (complimentary).
This had me at the a cappella duet of Springsteen's "I'm On Fire" inside a fluorescent lit laundromat. A stellar neon-soaked New Jersey fever dream replete with dreamscape diners, nocturnal cowboys, and the incandescent Indya Moore as a glamorous night club MC. I can't wait to see what other stories writer-star River Gallo has to share with the world.
PONYBOI feels similar to other crime thrillers but is told from a perspective I have never seen before, making it feel fresh and exciting. A standout performance from River Gallo guides us through this neon-lit, very well-shot story on identity. Scene-stealing work from Dylan O’Brien, Indya Moore & Murray Bartlett is just the icing on the cake. Not perfect by any means but still gritty & absorbing.
Beautifully written and composed. At times, I felt like the personal story of the lead and the crime element weren’t cohering, but it worked. River Gallo is a star. I can’t wait to see more of his work. Dylan O’Brien is also fucking horrifying in this. He sells the character. Victoria Pedretti and Murray Bartlett round out the cast with some great characters. Indya Moore is a standout because of course they are. Casting someone from Uncut Gems in this sold the tension of everything. It’s just very cool and exciting to behold. I'm very excited to see what River Gallo does next!
River Gallo is both the writer and star of this very personal film set in the underworld of New Jersey. Truck stops, laundromats, and cheap motels make up the majority of locations. Giving off a neo-noir vibe, Gallo as the title character, quickly got me on their side. They command the screen emitting so much life in every scene. I haven't seen many films, if any, about the intersex experience. It gave me some insight that I really appreciated. Even better it entertains, while also bringing light to the experience of not fitting into a binary world. Rejected by their father, Ponyboi turns to sex work. Their pimp, played by Dylan O'Brien is a complete asshole but also kind of…
