Synopsis
An all-star cast tells the inside story of the Broadway theater, and how it came back from the brink thanks to innovative work, a new attention to inclusion and a sometimes uneasy balance between art and commerce. Legends of the stage and screen—including Helen Mirren, Christine Baranski, August Wilson, James Corden, Alec Baldwin, John Lithgow, Viola Davis, Hugh Jackman and Ian McKellen—take us behind the scenes of Broadway's most groundbreaking and beloved shows, from A Chorus Line to Hamilton. Iconic performances by Lin Manuel Miranda, Patti LuPone, Bernadette Peters, James Earl Jones and Mandy Patinkin lead the way on a hurly burly ride through Times Square, once again the main street of American show business in this documentary directed by Academy-Award nominee Oren Jacoby.

A good overview of the history of Broadway, and in turn, theatre in general.
If they would have ditched their half-assed focus on the new play The Nap, and instead spent that time discussing Broadway’s biggest bombs (highlighting Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark), this would easily be ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

Choosing the Christmas night movie is the year’s hardest gig. “You watch lots of movies, you choose”, is how the discussion with my siblings usually starts, with no concept of how hard that task is in an extended family whose movie going habits range from weekly to monthly, to once a year. Covid prevented the annual family get together last year, but regular online catch-ups since then arrived at a consensus that we should do a zoom Christmas night meal and movie watch.
While my mind was wrestling with the logistics of managing that across five physical locations and a time zone issue - Queensland is an hour behind having rejected daylight saving in 1972 on the basis that…

I could sit all day and watch Broadway personalities contextualize the history of the American theatre. Hell, I could sit for a 20-year-long documentary that broke down Broadway history on a show-by-show basis. I'm not as thrilled to hear them try to place our current moment in context since it usually just amounts to hyperbolic sound bites and you can never really know the significance of the current moment until time has passed enough to see where it fits. Nor did I much care for the amount of time spent featuring the development and opening of a play called "The Nap" that I had not heard of...because they don't mention that it closed after 6 weeks. But I guess those…

From Kino Lorber & Metropole Film Board & Storyville Films comes an awesome documentary about the history of this internationally known streets in NYC directed by Oren Jacoby. It features a bunch of famous theatre people like Sir Ian McKellen. Informative without being preachy and this is my last review 4 2day😎

Every decade or so we get a mid sized documentary about the history of Broadway. The audience for these films are not too discerning and they'll happily lap up a retread of the facts that they're already so familiar with. I think the more specific these documentaries get with their subjects, the better they are. The last great one I saw was 2007's "ShowBusiness: The Road To Broadway," which focused on four vastly different shows in a single Broadway season to highlight their differences, successes, and failures. This documentary does start out with a honed in idea, about the moment in the 70's when the whole New York theatrical industry started to grow stagnant and its triumphant return and evolution…

BRING BACK THE RATS AND HOOKERS ON TIMES SQUARE
AND BRING BACK $9.90 BROADWAY TICKETS TOO
-
Old Broadway: low ticket prices and lots of prostitutes.
New Broadway: way-too-high ticket prices and zero prostitutes.
WTF happened, New York?
-
As soon as Michael Eisner showed up, you knew the movie had found its villain.

Great archival footage of 70s New York and a nice selection of interviews. The framework of showing us behind the scenes of a new Broadway play was the weakest part.

On Broadway is a fascinating look at the business of Broadway theaters and its history that has led it to become one of the defining aspects of New York City. Anyone who knows me knows I love musicals and live theater. I have planned trips for the sole purpose of seeing a live show, whether it be my trip to New York to see the original Broadway cast of Moulin Rouge! to take seeing an original Broadway cast off my bucket list, or flying to London to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. So naturally, this documentary was right in my wheelhouse. Like anybody, I enjoy a good documentary on a subject matter that I am very interested in,…
