Kris Kringle, seemingly the embodiment of Santa Claus, is asked to portray the jolly old fellow at Macy's following his performance in the Thanksgiving Day parade. His portrayal is so complete that many begin to question if he truly is Santa Claus, while others question his sanity.

What’s lovely about this movie is there is no miracle on 34th Street — at least not an overt one (unless you count Macy’s encouraging its customers to shop at other department stores if they don’t stock the item they want). Kris Kringle may be Santa Claus; nothing in the film rules that out. But by design, nothing conclusively proves he is the real Santa either. He might just be a delusional old man. Even the last shot, meant to suggest a divine presence, can be easily explained without any supernatural shenanigans — it’s basically just a Rorschach test for the audience.
So what do you believe? It’s easy to believe in magic and miracles when a reindeer flies right in front of you, as in so many lesser Christmas films. Faith demands belief in something you cannot see. So the real miracle, if this movie does its job, happens in the viewer’s heart.
You know when you drink hot chocolate on a cold winter's day and you feel its warmth fill you? This is that feeling in film form.

I love how they establish Santa isn't real to any of the adults until they all start seeing how his existence can benefit their business. Corporations
see a spike in profit and they suddenly want to make Santa real because it will encourage parents to buy gifts.
Santa becomes legally real because of self interest and not the general 'holiday film Christmas spirit'. It's a grounded reality of the story and I genuinely liked it.

Since the climax of the movie comes down to a politically ambitious judge litigating on Santa, there must be some Saint Nick style magic in the rest of the plot of “Miracle on 34th Street” that has cast a spell for three quarters of a century.

Wondered if I might have ideological issues with this now, but it's not so much anti-rationalism as pro-imagination, primarily where young children are concerned. Apart from the cane in the very last scene (which really could just be coincidence), we're given no reason to believe that "Kris Kringle" is anything but a kindly old man suffering from a harmless delusion; whether he's really Santa Claus is ultimately unimportant, since his influence on those around him remains the same no matter what you believe.
