Synopsis
Love without regrets, live life to the fullest
Characterized by her sharp tongue and daring attitude, Jae-hee is always at the center of gossip and hateful rumors. Meanwhile, Heung-soo is set on keeping his gay identity a secret for life. One day, in the back alley of a hotel, Jae-hee discovers Heung-soo’s secret by chance. Contrary to Heung-soo’s worries, Jae-hee keeps his secret and even helps him in a critical moment. As the two misfits begin to rely on each other, they secretly move in together and attempt to find love in the prejudiced world they live in.

ngl i was worried coming into this knowing that it wasn’t going to cover the whole book but i adored the expansion of jae-hee and her relationship with young/heung-soo. rightly, their closeness is ephemeral in the novel (kids, they grow up so fast!), but it was beautiful seeing it in its totality with all the playfulness and devotion they exchange. kim go-eun and noh sang-hyun have a wonderful platonic chemistry: you really feel the other’s absence when they’re apart.

Love is freedom, love takes courage, and love is friendship. I will kill to find a best friend like Jaehee, to be honest. I am genuinely happy that this has the same warmth and few accurate visuals as the original novel. I have to acknowledge that the way Love in the Big City retelling what the book/novel was trying to say with such knowledge and understand the society relevance is incredible. A coming-of-age film that the formula is no stranger but what the storytelling delivered is attractive, the difference this time includes sentimental themes. The everyday problems applied: social judgements, discrimination, hate crime, toxic masculinity, but mostly self-conflict about growing up and find out what we actually want, also a…

นอกจาก Next Sohee ปีนี้ ยกให้ Love in the big city

Lowkey wasn't vibing with this for like the first half of the movie. Felt like a typical gen-z Netflix rom-com then all of sudden became one of the most heartwarming and sweetest stories of friendship I've seen in quite some time. An emotional sneak attack out of nowhere.

Beauty is found when you are able to live as your fullest and truest self, and Love in the Big City explores this through the friendship between a thot daughter and gay son who are struggling to be themselves while navigating a variety of challenging situations, such as experiencing discrimination, coming out, and domestic violence. Making space for all of these challenging topics could present some difficulty, especially as the film exists as a Korean slice-of-life film, but I was impressed at how much was balanced in under 2 hours. Friendship is at the forefront of this film and despite what is addressed here, this was a lovely watch.

TIFF 2024 #44: Special Presentations (World Premiere)
Feels almost like I just watched the entire season of a K-Drama because that's the sort of energy that this movie has. But even then, I feel almost like it'd be easy to assume lots of things about this movie based on its two leads (both excellent) and its title - so I came out quite surprised as I watched it and then the film showed itself to be far more complicated than it shows itself to be on the surface.
It's a movie that captures how being in love (or even trying to find romance) turns you into someone heavily dependent on another person to a point of constriction. But it also captures that difficulty of being a closeted gay man and coming out all too perfectly well.
