A young nurse is kidnapped by a group of violent teens who escape from a mental hospital and take her on the road trip from hell. Pursued by an equally deranged lawman out for revenge, one of the teens is destined for tragedy and horrors that will destroy his mind, moulding him into a monster named Leatherface.

If nothing else, Leatherface is fascinating as an experiment of New French Extremity finding its own path through an American space - that of the 'Torture Porn' movement. Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, of the gloriously nasty Inside, seek to unearth the ideas behind the traumatic anguish of the Leatherface origin, both by breaking down the psychology of the titular character as well as examining the space by which this outcome is possible. It isn't particularly successful, as Leatherface has always seemed to be a rampaging metaphor of the original film's function as a capitalistic critique - pure, frazzled energy and terror all in the pursuit of consumption. BUT, in spite of its lifting from mid-2000s Horror remakes and the curiosity of auteurs like Rob Zombie, Leatherface is pretty good as a gross-out stylistic exercise.
The very premise of this is total bullshit, of course (the idea that Leatherface can be explained―and contained―within narrative), but the solid like 20 mins of weirdo New Extremity gore porn in here? [Chef kiss.]

There is a weird Gen X teen killers on the run everything sucks vibe to this movie where nearly everyone is a psychotic killer pursuing, capturing, imprisoning and murdering other psychotic killers or helping psychotic killers do so with varying levels of apathy and Leatherface isn't who you are but a condition that could occur to anyone given the universality of oppression. Neither angry nor sad, more what do you want from me i only work here and my manager is at lunch i will never leave this town our lives are both too short and too long lets get high out the loading dock on our 15 minute break
I don’t throw the word useless around very often, but sometimes you watch a movie that just fits that description perfectly. Some nice gore though.
Arguably one of the better Texas Chainsaw Massacre films, Leatherface is most certainly not a necessary prequel, but for what it is, it's surprisingly kind of fun, with nice gore effects, solid performances, and even a compelling story with a better handled than expected origin for the title character.
I didn’t think this was as bad as I heard even if it’s also not really anything amazing. The whole “how Leatherface became Leatherface” origin story was certainly not one I would have ever come up with on my own so points for originality there. I mean, it’s entirely unrealistic, but it made for a fun watch.
Lili Taylor is just too amazing and she pulls off the white trash mama Sawyer role with ease. I especially loved her mannerisms in this. She just has the whole thing down so well, not that I ever doubted she could do it. Stephen Dorff plays the redneck sheriff just like you’d expect him to so I thought the casting was great. I totally get the whole “it doesn’t feel like a TCM movie” complaint even if I can’t really say why. Still, it was fun and beautifully gory in parts so it’s worth a watch.
I’ve been eagerly awaiting this ever since it was announced, super curious as to what approach Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo would take. I’ve seen the reviews on both sides... and I’m a fan of the filmmakers... so where do I stand with Leatherface? I don’t mind backstory in prequels or sequels, but I will admit I had a hard time believing that this Leatherface would grow up and be the Leatherface we know and love but I can suspend disbelief enough to enjoy a gritty, backwoods bloodfest that was at least respectful to its origins and opted to give us a violent road movie that doesn’t rely heavily on slasher tropes
This film is shot well, there’s definitely some nice cinematography…
A mostly bad movie with some glimmers of gold- primarily in the gore department. Sexy Leatherface was definitely a choice.
