  "It's not groovy to be insane."

  Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice is a force to be reckoned with. It's a shimmering and paranoiac masterwork that bubbles with a sustained sense of wistful loss and slowly-fading hopefulness. Masquerading as a neo-noir of convoluted and increasingly tense situations, PTA's film instead uses the complex story-line as a framework for a time and place that is both lost but constantly remembered. Combined with a delightful ensemble cast, typical PTA visual/aural nirvana, and a giddy eye for surreal situations and humor; Paul Thomas Anderson's latest is a wonderful trip that further showcases his individuality as a filmmaker as well as evoking tragedy with a potent dose of hilarity.

  wish i hadn’t been so primed to think this was incredibly confusing (it’s not) i would’ve seen it ages ago. had a lovely time, definitely best with a crowd. i don’t think we as a people give enough shine to joaquin’s physical/comedy/physical comedy chops, he’s got several glances alone here that made me cackle. also, where on earth has katherine waterston been. she’s a revelation. she should be in every third movie. i should be so tired of people telling me she’s 5’11” by now. did you guys know katherine waterston is 5’11”??? and british??? would’ve put money on her being 4’10 from rancho cucamonga. THAT’S acting

  In America, money is everything. In film noir, money is everything else.

  Towards the end of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, there’s a scene in which Joaquin Phoenix’s Larry “Doc” Sportello – the goofily mutton-chopped private detective at the heart of this sweet and strung-out noir odyssey – is offered a generous mountain of cash in exchange for the return of it really doesn’t matter what. When Doc tells his client that he might prefer a different form of payment, the man curtly replies: “Well, money would be a lot easier.” It always is.

  Without a doubt, the most hysterical movie of the year... Paul Thomas Anderson's funniest, most absurd film yet - to me, the most consistently hilarious film since A Serious Man (2009). His direction is top notch here; I think this film might be the most obvious display of his genius that I've seen yet (though There Will Be Blood is, and always will be, my favorite PTA film). Inherent Vice is probably the most immediate favorite though, because as you're watching it, there's no denying how fantastic and seemingly accurate of a psychedelic, chemical-fueled atmosphere it has, and there's no suppressing the laughter anytime an almost alien-esque Joaquin Phoenix opens his damn mouth.   I’ve been thinking a lot about the Neil Young's "Journey Through the Past" music cue in Inherent Vice. I just want to live in that moment forever, it's all of the movie's nostalgic melancholy boiled down into this one scene.

  Man, I love this movie more & more with each passing year.
