If I had spent 30 minutes watching some of Whitney’s greatest hits on YouTube and then read the Wikipedia entry about her, I would have gotten the exact same level of insight into her life

A music biopic so broad and hacky it makes “Jersey Boys” seem like “All that Jazz,” Kasi Lemmons’ well-acted but laughably trite “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody” is an anonymous portrait of a singular artist — a by-the-numbers “Behind the Music” episode that needs 146 minutes to say almost nothing about a once-in-a-lifetime voice. Not even “Bohemian Rhapsody” was so obviously written by the guy who wrote “Bohemian Rhapsody,” as Anthony McCarten’s algorithmic script skips down the various sections of Houston’s Wikipedia page with all the flow of a scratched greatest hits CD.

Naomi Ackie’s breakout performance in the overlong & conventional WHITNEY HOUSTON: I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY is sensational. Any scenes she shares with the lovable Stanley Tucci are highlights. The rest is sadly lacking its own voice for the greatest voice of her generation.

Did you know that Whitney Houston's biopic, called simply, “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody” hits upon over 40 different touch-points of Whitney’s life, but failed to adequately explore any one of them with any sort of real depth?
Did you know that, Christie?
I mean, there is an idea of a Whitney Houston; some kind of abstraction. But there is no real insight: only an entity, something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and I can shake my head and hear her amazing voice in my ears and maybe I can even sense that her life was extraordinary…
But as far as this generic biopic goes… she simply is not there.

Being such a massive fan of Whitney over the years I was very hesitant at how this would actually turn out. Especially after the not quite right looking trailers. It did had plenty of flaws. The direction wasn’t the best. It was pretty cookie cutter biopic wise. It was clumsy and a little disrespectful at times touching on Bobby Brown and the substance abuse in general. However, I still did end up really enjoying this. It was just so nice to hear Whitney on the big screen and seeing some of her greatest performances showcased like this. I think some of y’all forgot that Whitney ended the nepo baby debate 30 some years ago.
This is a bit of a mixed bag as far as music biopics go. First, Naomi Ackie is really excellent and handles all of the elements with precision from Whitney’s mannerisms and movements the incredibly difficult task of lip syncing to Whitney’s vocals. It’s not easy to make lip syncing look believable, but I think for the most part it’s accomplished really well. There is simply no substitute for Whitney’s voice and being able to use all her original recordings is a huge plus.
The film does really well to recreate/recapture many of her Houston’s most iconic moments. Even though there isn’t anything… -
Far from a flawless film, it has more than its share of flaws, and I could sit here and list them all but why bother, I’d much rather talk about what I loved about it. It’s a big, grand and lavish film, it takes some surprising turns that I wasn’t expecting (it doesn’t shy away from Whitney’s bisexuality which was the biggest surprise) and the power of the music is first and foremost the driving force of the film, as it should be.
Naomi Ackie delivers a nice performance as Whitney, is she perfect? No. But she doesn’t need to be to still be a convincing Whitney and overall what she does in the role is excellent.
All in all, a fun and entertaining time at the movies. It will please its intended audience I think. I enjoyed it a lot.
