They saw the devil on a busy night. He had no body, nor hands and legs. He showed up as a female, standing directly under the spotlight, tugged around by the water, hair dancing like seaweed.
I saw the devil, he came in various forms. Sometime's it's an ear, sometime's a ring. Sometimes human, with maniac eyes and a huge disgusting grin.
I saw the devil, the devil himself. He's laughing and he's not sorry. I'm not afraid, only angry. I don't dance…

Second pass because I want to get behind something this ferocious and technically adept but it's so repetitive, so criminally long and so fatally shallow that I have to stick to my guns and call it a failure. While my lizard brain thrills to the astounding violence and virtuoso camerabatics this is still a pretty tired consumed-by-revenge jam, so narratively convoluted and hypocritical in its rote moralizing that I'm wondering if it isn't just a big joke, that Kim is just making a comedy of errors that happens to be about a couple of raging psychopaths. I don't mind that this is a flimsy clothesline for expertly choreographed sadism, I mind that it's 2 1/2 hours long and almost gleefully stupid.

I want to start off by saying that no amount of superlatives could quite explain how much I love this film. Don't get me wrong, A Dirty Carnival is still my favourite South Korean Film but I Saw the Devil is certainly high up on my list.
I Saw the Devil is a cutting depiction of the effect that committing violence has on men psyche's. Apart from that, it also makes a point about revenge that no other film has quite managed.
When you are wronged, when someone you love is hurt or taken from you, there is never any amount of eye for an eye that can meet that level of pain.

I Saw The Devil is a masterpiece of Korean Revenge Cinema, perhaps the masterpiece. It hearkens back to Jacobean Revenge Drama, lit theatrically, mixing daily reality with the highest Grand Guignol, severe and understated while also wildly over the top, I Saw The Devil stretches out to its fullest extent, maximizing itself like a predator confronting another predator in the wild. Never in this movie does revenge seem like the right thing to do or an advisable course of action, even when wholly understandable.
