"Last call, last chance to drink the last drop. The old bastard wants to go home. The old lady's waiting; he'd rather kiss Satan. The old bastard wants to go home. Drink up, drink up, drink up."
Part The Shining, part MAGA dystopia, History of Evil is good horror. It’s a slow horror film about mental unraveling under the pressures of segregationist history and toxic masculinity. It went someplace I wasn’t expecting and gave me a few moments to remember.
I think this is getting a lot of shit because it’s so overt in its political message and it’s a bit cartoonish. This…
I'll give History of Evil credit for being a pretty unique film. However, none of its elements seem to come together successfully. It feels like they threw a multitude of ideas at the wall, but none of them stick. A major problem with History of Evil stems from its inability to find a coherent balance among its various genres. It lacks the requisite level of fear to be classified as a horror film, it doesn't provide sufficient excitement to be considered a thriller, and it lacks the necessary grounding in reality to be intellectually stimulating. By attempting to mold this type of film into a haunted house narrative, the film's intended message becomes obscured. It fails to explore characters beyond…
A slow burn with good acting but characters with one track minds which each one focuses on a different thing but not acknowledging what is going on around them.
Last 17 minutes is where the tension resides just to quickly fizzle out and the execution was lazy and the film felt unfinished.

History of Nonsense. It puts a few decent ideas in a plastic bag, mixes them up, and what ultimately comes out of that bag is so mixed up and ruined that I don't even know what to make of it except throw it in the garbage. Weird decision making from the characters. All over the place. Terrible execution.
Believable; dystopian; frightening; political; sad; short; slow-burning; spooky; unsatisfying; unsubtle.
History of Evil is a grab bag of grounded near future paranoia speculative fiction, southern gothic horror, haunted houses, magical realism, male fragility, and, I dunno, evil Lego bricks (sorry, wrong movie). It's kind of a thematic and plot hodge-podge... though a well made one, at least.
The flick is set in a near future where fascists have taken over North America. Members of a resistance are placed in a safe house on their way to freedom... the safe house is safe because, I dunno, ghosts... locals are afraid of it. Too bad the evil militia didn't get the spooky memo.
Yeah, take your pick: near future fundamentalist America with gun-totin' fascists vs. racist ghosts... though also sexist ghosts... but…

An appetizer before Civil War? The strangest haunted house ever made? A political-thriller with a pinch of traditional horror? I don’t know man. This one is hard to describe or to give a label. It’s certainly unique. Which makes History of Evil one of the most undefinable movies of 2024.
I did like the first scene and the political implications. Even if the budget is low, and the locations are limited, I could understand the urgency to protect an important individual. As we advanced more through the film, I became more invested in the ‘outside world’ dynamic than the ‘cursed house’ situation.
It’s just weird to be in the mood for some horror material and all I’m getting is some haunted-house shlock and uneventful ‘The Shining’ nibble.
Not particularly good but definitely different. If that can count for something.
Simultaneously does way too much while not doing enough of any of it, if that makes sense?
Mannnn Shudder be dropping some of the weakest horror films available smh. An old racist ghost rubs black blood on a dude's lips and starts randomly popping up to have convos about being a racist with him which causes him to slowly become racist. His wife is Hispanic and their friend is black. Nothing happens and nothing matters smh.
Paul Wesley, my guy what are you doing here? During my watch of History of Evil, my mind kept picking out similarities to The Shining (1980). It’s almost as if somebody saw that movie and said “let’s make that but about race and masculinity” which isn’t the worst premise. In fact it could be interesting if done well. At least it’s a fast, short watch.
I almost fell asleep watching this one. Such a slow rot of a cautionary tale that it barely held my attention. And then when it finally starts to wrap things up, I was hoping for something, anything that would have justified my staying awake for. But nope it ultimately left me questioning the messaging of the story and my judgment on watching a movie when I should have gone to bed.
