This kind of annoyed me because Harriet Tubman has SUCH an amazing and interesting story and it’s crazy that there hasn’t already been a movie about her. But she deserved a better movie than this one honestly.
Cynthia Erivo did a really great job and Janelle Monae stood out too (as she always does). And the cinematography was absolutely gorgeous. But it just wasn’t enough to make this work for me.
The script was just really lacking power. It was too generic and she does not deserve a generic story. I think if they had focused on a more specific moment in her life instead of trying to cover everything it would have worked better. I feel like they skimmed over a lot of the interesting moments to try to get her whole life into 2 hours and that took a lot of the excitement away.
Some interesting threads get tugged a little here, about stark differences of class and gender and education among slaves and black abolitionists alike, but not hard enough to overcome what's mostly some very generic biopic stuff. And personally I would have loved a lot more of Tubman's Union Army career.
Incredibly disappointing given how great the real life story is. Erivo and an underused Monae are both wonderful, and their dynamic is the best part of the film - however, everything around them is aggressively pedestrian and poorly thought out. From a story standpoint, this falls into a typical biopic trap of trying to cover too much in too little time, such that moments are rarely allowed to breathe and develop. The pacing just never pulls you in because it's too distracted with figuring itself out, seesawing between plot points and characters with little purpose. Because of that, the heart of Harriet's story gets lost in all the shuffle, and you can't really make out a clear vision or focus…
WARNING FOR MORONS: Criticizing a movie about a historical figure is not the same thing as criticizing that historical figure.
Thank God someone owed Ned Utley a whiskey.
This does NOT make up for getting screwed out of the $20 bill. So... this movie kind of sucks and it sucks that the film sucks because Harriet Tubman is a badass. The movie, tonally, feels like a light-hearted action romp when like I don't know if you've heard about slavery, but it was pretty serious. The musical cues, lighting, costumes, etc, all feel like a Disney film like Pirates of Caribbean. Harriet doesn't feel like it took place a long time ago, it feels like it took place on a studio…
Gratefully, this doesn’t shy away from Harriet Tubman’s singular religious faith (even the wilder stuff, like her prophetic visions) and Cynthia Erivo is an absolutely inspired choice, capturing her strength with such grace and vulnerability. Still, it’s unfortunate that little elements like a misplaced musical score and misguided editing can totally cripple an otherwise solid movie. It’s perfectly competent, and even inspiring at times, but it could have be so much better with a cleaner job in post-production.
in case you didn't think it was possible turn the life of one of the most extraordinary people in american history into a mediocre movie, 'harriet' is here to set you straight
Harriet is a pedestrian biopic, with no really awful elements but similarly nothing exceptional. It is little more than its story, and doesn't contain the formal rigour and deep themes of slavery films like 12 Years a Slave. Instead there's pop music montages and many time jumps. Harriet is more like a bland, clichéd, gun-toting, melodramatic TV movie than a serious, hard-hitting work of cinema. There's so many tropes and so little realism. Yet at its most powerful Harriet provides a righteous argument that those with the least privilege should have the most say in how to help those in need. Therefore it's a little disheartening to see the awards season reduce this film down to a token to be…
HARRIET respectfully pays tribute to an iconic hero whose bravery deserved a biopic much sooner. I wish it was better. Cynthia Erivo delivers strong work but she barely holds everything together, as the film is plagued by a generic script, odd editing & an overly dramatic score.
