  I have to admit, considering how low my expectations were for a Gerard Butler's end-of-the-world movie going in, GREENLAND definitely exceeded my expectations and boy was i surprised. Despite following some disaster movie cliches, this is a cut above most in this genre. A solid, well-directed & gripping movie, that manages to wring out a lot of tension and exhilarating bleakness from a very familiar premise. It's really grounded & subdued, focused more on characters rather than CGI spectacle, basically the antithesis of what the disaster genre has become. Even the performances are not caricature-ish or over-the-top, they feel very grounded with Gerard Butler giving one of his finest performances in years.

  After the hellscape of a year that was 2020, it stands to reason that a disaster movie about a regular guy and his family trying to stay alive as the world goes to shit around them would feel redundant and/or too close to home. Either way, it seems like something that wouldn’t be worth paying for when you can get the real thing for free by looking at your window, turning on the TV, or — and this one is extra fun — just thinking about literally any single aspect of your life as it’s been since March.

  Ich schreibe diese Zeilen, während der Film noch läuft. Ich möchte nach Hause. Eine Stunde müsste ich schon überstanden haben, vielleicht mehr - ich weiß nicht mehr. Die Zeit verschwimmt. Seit Filmstart schreien sich pausenlos Leute an, für einen Kometenfilm schlagen erschreckend wenig Kometen ein, wenn überhaupt dann off-screen. Im Fokus steht nämlich, hört hört, das menschliche Drama. Deshalb schreien und heulen alle durcheinander, hüben wird jemand geboxt, drüben ein Supermarkt gelootet - Katastrophen-Einmaleins, aber auf die denkbar nervtötendste Weise. Rund alle 10 Minuten muss ja was passieren, weshalb völlig abstruse Situationen forciert werden, von denen jede einzelne derart realitätsferner Unsinn ist, dass ich mich ernsthaft ein bisschen fremdschäme.

  Facetten hat hier niemand, Gerard Butler spielt sich ohnehin seit Jahren…

  Frequently silly, of course, but also not-infrequently tense, and surprisingly relatively downbeat. Think the DTV not-too-much-money-for-disaster-VFX version of Spielberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS and you're sort of getting there. Given our current predicament (as of this writing) here in the US, with, what, a third-and-possibly-worst-yet wave of Covid coming on, are you up for a quarantine stream of a movie about impending infrastructural collapse and mass hysteria, rah-rah first-responder heroism, and family? I don't fuckin know. But no matter what this is entirely worth it because Gerry Butler chugs an entire glass of water in it. For the fans.

  “Why did only John’s phone get it?”

  What a beautiful, emotional, frenzy filled ride. Greenland is one of the greatest films I’ve seen in 2020. It’s an epic, I haven’t experienced a film like this in a while. I was consistently at the edge of my seat and prepared to see it all come to an unfortunate bleak end. Everything about this film, from the plot to the characters and visuals. It’s akin to 2012 (2009), Armageddon (1998), The Core (2003), Deep Impact (1998), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), Knowing (2009), and more. Films I can’t get enough of.

  Maybe I shouldn’t watch end-of-the-world films in 2020 because the reality is much worse… Greenland is about a detached couple, their son, and their chaotic journey in making it to the underground bunker in Greenland, as the world once again gets a factory reset by a dinosaur-killing asteroid. I think I am so tired of the current events and seen so many apocalyptic films that the ‘end of the world due to an asteroid’ concept didn’t work for me as much as I’d hope it to be; like how did no one notice the asteroids months in advance is beyond me, and knowing United States, they would’ve nuked that space object to pieces.   Authentically upsetting at times and surprisingly even-tempered as natural disaster/Gerard Butler movies go. Not exactly a balm at the end of a frightening year, but it’s solid, mid-shelf pseudo-Roland Emmerich. Garbage Crime veteran Ric Roman Waugh seems to be escalating toward movies that are both more somber and more bombastic than his Snitch roots. Still, Butler kills a guy by lodging the sharp end of a hammer through the skull. So it’s still a Gerard Butler movie. Not quite Garb Crime given the comet and all, though CR and I have been brainstorming on the sci-fi equivalent for a future episode and this is in range.
