didn't think we needed a "not all white people are bad actually" movie in 2018 but ok
English teachers everywhere are gonna bust a nut when this hits home video because it’s an absolute wet dream of a “movie to show to my class that deals with Serious Issues in a non-confrontational and palatable way when I don’t have a lesson plan.”

the best picture nominee equivalent of watery, room temperature oatmeal. this was so incredibly dull that it baffles me how far something like this can get when such unique, bold and innovative movies have come out in the same year. there have even been much better safe and easily accessible comfort movies this year as well, but somehow this is one of 2018’s so called highlights? have people been watching this blindfolded?
sure, it’s somewhat harmless, but it bothers me so because it lacks in almost every way: uninspiring, uninteresting, undeserving. i’m tempted to give it half a star, but bumped it up because mahershala ali truly brings his a-game to every role he plays. otherwise, this brings me nothing but exhaustion. we can do better than this, we owe ourselves that much
it's virtually impossible to watch this hokey charmer (based on a true friendship!!) without thinking about what an utter shitshow its eventual release is going to be on the internet, but Mahershala Ali is just so dang good and Viggo Mortensen somehow manages to make his character SUCH an Italian stereotype that it bends all the way back around into some kind of uncanny truth.
A movie with the goal of appealing to everyone somehow manages to be so damn unlikeable and easy to hate. But somehow it actually worked and got me to not despise it’s corniness. Could it be Mahershala’s amazing performance? Could it be Viggo’s pretty good performance? Could it be the manipulative ass score? (I’m so fed up with this bland ass ‘best picture’ music in all these dramas)
I’m looking at this a lot like how I looked at Love, Simon. Painfully cheesey approach to the subject matter but maybe it should be approached cheesey if we want these types of messages to appeal to bigger audiences? Saw this in the same theatre in Minnesota that I saw Blackkklansman in…

Everyone is allotted one Forrest Gump in their lives. This is mine.
Almost entirely based in lies, notions of misconstruing blackness, in addition to plain ole' white savior bullshit. Green Book is embarrassing. And yet, it is, against my better judgement and every fiber of my being as a socially-conscious viewer, immensely watchable, with two tremendous performances at the forefront and handsomely told. Sean Porter's DP work is gorgeous. Mahershala Ali offers a universe of emotion via a shift in posture, a lowering of the head. And Viggo Mortensen is hilarious, always shoving food in his mouth, and when he's not, spouting off on race relations like he's the expert on what black people are supposed to listen to…
A road trip film? Check.
That runs through Christmas time? Check.
Viggo Mortensen in a hilarious role; Mahershala Ali being suave as all hell; the most charming on-screen pairing in recent memory?
Check, check, and check.
People will argue how Green Book could have dug deeper into its themes of race and adversity that came with its setting.
It definitely could have, but I feel other films are better suited for that; Farrelly chose to focus on themes of camaraderie, development, learning and loving, all with delightful results.
It’s perfect for what it is, and there’s something for everyone to love.
