I really enjoyed this, and not just because I’m the exact same age as the characters and can relate to their crippling anxieties about my (whoops I mean their) inadequacies and failures. It honestly had nothing to do with that.
Not at all.
Funny, sobering, wistful, wonderful. A really really wonderful movie about comedy, friendship, love, success, jealousy, feelings of inadequacy, and feeling your dreams slip away from you.
Like, aren't we all just making it up as we go along? Y'know?
Okay I'm being a little mean, this was cute. But so what.
New episode of Cineflek with Jeff Borislow is OUT NOW!!
Really enjoyed this rewatch, Mike Birbiglia crafts a small world where the characters in this comedy troupe are all relatable, and it seems at this point in their life because of their own actions.
Often movies take for granted that their characters are extremely driven to get something done, but in real life that isn't always the case. We often have mental blocks that halt us from achieving our goals. Don't Think Twice has characters that don't succeed because they lack talent, but also characters that don't succeed because they push opportunity away. While I don't think I am this actively self destructive, I think we all have these tendencies that are rarely…
44/100
THIS MOVIE MADE ME FUCKING *ANGRY* review not up till Monday, but I had to get this out of my system.
About ten minutes into my most anticipated film of the summer, Mike Birbiglia’s improv-world comedy, Don’t Think Twice, I had something approaching a panic attack. “This isn't right,” I thought, “I should be the ideal audience for this. Improv is in my blood, for chrissakes. Why does this all feel so wrong?” Maybe because it gets so much right. And it’s true, Mike Birbiglia has definitely done improv; he's got the basic skeleton of it down pat. Zip-Zap-Zop and Partner Agreement, Morph Circles and Lateral Moves, all the inside-baseball stuff is here. Love for the art-form practically bleeds…
Curious if Birbiglia ever conceived this as a series. Think it could have worked like gangbusters as a 10 episode season covering a year in the life of this improv troupe. As it is, excellent insight into the improv world and some very good performances (Gillian Jacobs especially) over-burdened with plot.
i would've rated higher if lena dunham wasn't in it
it is so weird that there was a moment in time when UCB and Mike Birbiglia had enough cultural cachet that a Mike Birbiglia movie about UCB got distributed by *Universal Pictures* despite having absolutely nothing that would appeal to anyone who wasn’t a comedy nerd.
First time rewatching in years and I’m really struck by how almost everyone in this is unlikeable, with a couple being worthy of actual hate.
Don't Think Twice or "Why I Never Hang Out with Theatre Majors for More than Ten Minutes Without Supervision"
p.s. that's a total lie I literally live with a Comedy Major
p.s.s. No you heard me right--a Comedy Major
(Review)
A little indie comedy about an improv troupe struggling to find success is a great premise and one a lot of aspiring artists of any kind can understand. Theatre, especially improv, is an entirely different ball game and takes so much out of a performer. Growing up in the Chicagoland area I was always aware of the impact the city of Chicago had on the improv community and vice versa. Chicago, home to The Second City and, by extension, to a great many of the great comedy geniuses of the last fifty years has a big reputation. In high school I was never involved in theatre (I have extreme stage fright!) but I always went to all the shows. When…
Your twenties are all about, like, hope, and then your thirties are all about realizing how dumb it was to hope.
Dealing with an ensemble like this, no matter the film's runtime, is a difficult task. There's all these different characters to keep track of, with their consistency and development, and it's one of the many things Don't Think Twice excels at. It's a movie that manages to flesh out all six main characters in really natural ways, while simultaneously giving them problems we likely will relate to. They all have their own different issues and anxieties, and their endings don't come off as half-assed. The overwhelming themes of lose and rejection tie in neatly to these characters. While we…
