On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. If you've seen The Iron Giant, The Water Horse, How to Train Your Dragon, ET: The Extraterrestrial, or any other variation on the "kid befriends beast" premise, you've seen this movie pretty much beat-for-beat. But yet, Bumblebee works. And bizarrely, the movie doesn't work *despite* its familiarity and cliches and simple plot-structure; it works *because* of it. The only word you can use to describe a film like this is "charming", because that's what it is. Hailee Steinfeld is charming, Bumblebee is charming, the 80s are charming, and the humor is charming. It's just a pleasant, heartfelt, sweet movie, even if it's not revolutionary. Not everything has to be. Nuff said.
hard to believe that john cena is going to get *two* nominations for Best Supporting Actor this year but you can't argue with the facts (he'll win for BLOCKERS, of course, assuming that Hugh Grant continues to get snubbed).
convincing proof that every single movie franchise — no matter how miserable — can be redeemed by firing Michael Bay and moving to the 1980s. when the shapeshifting alien robot learns to love the Smiths… i felt that.
I thought it could never happen, but it did: for the first time in my life I had an actual emotional investment in the well-being of a Transformer.
Gets worse the longer it goes on but it's mostly really charming and cute. John Cena's line about the Decepticons' name made me belly laugh cause that's exactly what I was thinking
I think I have a crush on every main character in this movie (Charlie and Bumblebee)

Rather than blow up everything in sight for 165 minutes, Knight only blows up select things while telling a sweet coming of age story.”
