Charlie Brown, Linus, Peppermint Patty and Marcie travel to France as foreign exchange students. Also along is Snoopy and Woodstock. While everyone is excited about the opportunity to travel to a foreign country, Charlie is disturbed by a letter he receives from a mysterious girl from France who invites him as a her guest only to find that he does not seem welcomed to her Chateau.

It makes some odd choices near the end, particularly the shoehorned-in World War II backstory and the out-of-nowhere Scooby-Doo vibes at the chateau, but for the most part, it's agreeably funny and contemplative.
i loved charlie from the funnies but this was my first p-nuts toon (weird considering how atypical & perilous it gets, as mdf describes)--i think one of my aunts got me the tape i hungrily watched about 1,000x entranced without knowing they called it the worst (non-flashbeagle) one--its moody orchestration, old-world setting & enigmatic, almost gialloesque scope linked it to other childhood obsessions like poe, holmes & edward gorey's opening credits to MYSTERY on pbs. 1st rewatch since i was 8 brought back some of its appeal--not just the hovercraft but a hermetic, puzzlelike structure, ugly faces against tintin-y architecture & eerie, almost post-apoc dead-spaces (4 big heads filling wide, empty halls to a vanishing point) but most gags flop & the resolution is pretty unsatisfying--not funny or deep enough but moments of cryptic beauty & oddly-cloaked charm

In an animated feature I’m not sure how it’s possible, but Snoopy and Woodstock completely steal the movie. Their adventures with the juke box in the root beer pub is my absolute favorite. Oh how I love them so.

fun how much of this is "wrong" - the adults have visible faces and discernable speech, Snoopy sexually harasses a flight attendant and gets drunk, the in-flight cartoon-within-a-cartoon animated in a different style (Peppermint Patty chooses to watch "Naughty Marietta" instead,) weird angles that sort of break Peanuts physics, the children in alarming amounts of peril (car accidents, burning buildings)
Kinda disgusting that the adults in this have actual dialogue and don't speak gibberish
Near the end of the movie, in the same 5 minute span, Peppermint Patty uses the phrase "too bad I couldn't give the kid a tumble, though" twice.
So things were pretty frisky in 1980, I gather. Whoa.

Vierter Zeichentrickfilm von 1980 mit den Peanuts, der mir auch wieder sehr gefallen hat. In der Peanuts Welt fühle ich mich immer sofort wohl, da es immer auf dem gleichen Niveau bleibt. Die Charaktere, und wie sie miteinander umgehen, finde ich gut. Der Humor stimmt und der Zeichenstil gefällt mir auch. Die Abenteuer der Peanuts muss man natürlich mit anderen (Kinder) Augen sehen, dann funktioniert das auch.
Single handedly piqued my interest in all things Europe and just traveling in general. I ended up going there when I was 16-17 so dreams really do come true! I kinda like how these films are Richard Linklater for babies, so much assuredness in nothing happening and in a moments notice compounding all at once. I feel like during the day I'm Marcie but at night I'm Snoopy reminiscing in the tavern and having a gay old drunken time. I say dear reader have you ever sat in an empty bar singing until the sun comes up? Remembering lost loves? Cause I have many a time and I tell ya it doesn't get any easier. I would also trust a dog to drive because if you don't have something to believe in then what do you have?
