a very French movie about Americans

Strange little movie, but definitely booked me a round trip to New Jersey of the late 70s, before I guess it would become the birthplace of Pauly D and Snooki.
Susan Sarandon and Burt Lancaster drift through this ensemble cast (feels like an Altman movie) and the dream-like landscape- apartments being demolished right next to the ocean.
Didn’t leave me feeling fully satisfied but it feels very real, and I like Malle’s style. He paints in broad strokes and captures…

In this, Burt Lancaster’s character was so clearly desperate for power and authority that I felt overwhelmingly sorry for him, even when he clearly behaves poorly

Susan Sarandon makes lemonade in her kitchen. Very wholesome 🍋

Wonderful stuff. One of Lancaster’s greatest turns. Echoes of The Swimmer, unbelievable chemistry with Sarandon.

Despite its aesthetic grittiness, Atlantic City is a very tender and even heartwarming crime drama/character piece. Lou is a fascinating, complex and incredibly likeable character because it seems he’s been so lonely and sad for such a long time, that this one chance of gaining back his reputation and much of the things he enjoys, sparks a real drive and love for life. Susan Sarandon is brilliant as Sally and her relationship with Lou is incredibly insightful, especially in…

🎵 Well they blew up the chicken man in Philly last night... 🎵
Oops. Wrong Atlantic City.
Burt Lancaster gets one of the last 'leading' roles of his career, and shows he still has it. Also his final Oscar nomination.
In a movie of lowlifes and desperate people, he brings the gravitas and charisma to make a character like this work.
Sarandon is superb too.

There’s a beautiful charm and whimsy to films like these, and call me pretentious, this feels much more like a film, than a movie
Subtle, but great performances and a story that doesn’t stretch too far, but gets enough out of its strong characters and even stronger atmosphere. I don’t think it’s perfect, but it’s one that’s popped up in my memory every now and then, one that’s both melancholic and celebratory to the intricacies of life, and sometimes life is determined by a few choices only strung together- a very meditative film

Atlantic City, the city, not the movie, in 2024, is a husk, 5-6 large, vibrant, gargantuan, horrifying hotels line the ocean. The hotels are so big, in fact, that from the ocean you can see ads for coming attractions playing outside the Tropicana, and hear the stock pop music play from over 1,000 feet away(easing your feet into the sea on a warm late summer night doesn't have the same appeal when you can hear Justin Bieber's Baby echo in…
