By all accounts, America’s Sweethearts should be a huge success. Cowritten by and starting Billy Crystal, a very funny man, the movie boasts an insane cast that includes *deep breath* Julia Roberts, John Cusack, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Christopher Walken, Stanley Tucci, Alan Arkin, Hank Azaria, Seth Green, and Rainn Wilson. The premise is a good one, if a little overcomplicated: a Hollywood publicist has to promote a new movie from a reclusive filmmaker by reuniting its recently-separated lead couple at a press junket.
With all the talent behind this idea, it should manifest into something like a rom-com version of The Player. Instead, it’s more like Crystal’s Larry Crowne: character motivations make little sense, the romance is severely underdeveloped, there aren’t nearly enough jokes, and Julia Roberts gives the only great performance. It’s an odd mix of cynicism and sentimentality that never finds a coherent balance.

great cast but it lacks so much as a romantic comedy. it was extremely boring to me up until the last half hour when it finally started to be somewhat entertaining. this could’ve been so good 😭 julia roberts and john cusack had that top tier romcom potential but the romance was so rushed and had no meaning WHY WHY WHY!!!! the only good thing to come out of this movie was the fact that the characters actually acknowledged their disgusting morning breath which is oftentimes completely nonexistent in other romcoms so props to that!
You’d be hard-pressed to find any late 90s/early 00s romcom that I don’t enjoy, and when you throw in Julia Roberts and some silly satire on the “behind-the-scenes” of showbiz, I’m a goner.
