"You Wouldn't Understand" said the erstwhile village girl whom fate has turned into a woman of Paris when the richest bachelor in the world's gayest city pointed to her glittering gems, asking, "What more do you want? You have everything."

When Marie St. Clair believes she has been jilted by her artist fiance Jean, she decides to leave for Paris on her own. After spending a year in the city as a mistress of the wealthy Pierre Revel, she is reunited with Jean by chance. This leaves her with the choice between a glamorous life in Paris, and the true love she left behind.

Purely for her uncredited role as ‘mannequin’, I’m dedicated this post to Bess Flowers. She’s honestly all I could think of during A Woman of Paris. Bess was the unseen queen of the silver screen with appearances in over 600 projects. Aptly her first ever film was Hollywood and she remains a small yet consistent thread woven throughout the tapestry of Tinseltown.
Mark my words, it’s only a matter of time before someone makes a deep-dive documentary on dear old Bess or a by-the-numbers biopic simply titled Flowers which finally wins Amy Adams her long-awaited Oscar.
Question: How many times has Bess Flowers graced your screen? According to Letterboxd my total is 60! She might just be your most watched performer and you never even knew she was there.

By reputation, this is Chaplin's "serious movie," though it's actually not too different from something like City Lights. Absent is the balletic slapstick, but A Woman of Paris is still plenty funny as it mocks the hypocrisy of the rich. "What do I get out of life?" asks the title character of her on-off asshole boyfriend, played by Adolphe Menjou. "Nothing." She throws her string of pearls out the window to underscore the point... then, when a dirty tramp picks it up off the sidewalk, runs outside to stop him, breaking a heel in the process. With the exception of the clumsy, mildly inarticulate writing, I get at most of the ideas I'd like to on this film in the write-up I did a few years ago on this, which isn't horrible. But what remiains kind of astonishing is how richly observed this film is, the fine detail, and the remarkably naturalistic way in getting to that detail - it tricks you into believing it's not stylized. It's the progenitor to Ernst Lubitsch & Michael Powell - they both admitted it themselves. But what differentiates it here is that Chaplin was no outsider looking in: he really lived in this world, literally from bottom to top. Chaplin's story of an literal oedipal dilemma, a man stuck between his dominant mother he's taken the responsibility for since the father died after the protagonist told them he'll marry the "wrong" woman. the woman meanwhile stuck with the decision between love and luxury, a penniless painter or a secular dandy treating her as a dependent little girl. tragedy looms, the romanticism is decapitated.
a little bit too many histrionics for a melodrama but Chaplin's solowork in the other direction of the spectrum does have a rich palette of emotions to offer, and is dedicated to deliver a sweet mockery of the upper class en passant.
ps a lot of restlessness during the screening, including a couple of ladies commenting and laughing at the movie. felt like some people were on shrooms.

Every time I see this, my mind is a little blown at the sophistication and economy of Chaplin's direction. The melodramatic opening is a little much, but otherwise this is a little masterclass in storytelling almost entirely via behaviour and implication.

Charlie Chaplin's first film for United Artists, a drama in which he does not appear, save for a brief Hitchcockian cameo. Its innovations are a little hard to recognize today, but it was greeted by critics and filmmakers of its era as a landmark for its naturalistic acting, sophisticated story, and subtle visual strategies for conveying sensitive information. Edna Purviance (Chaplin’s real-life lover and leading lady in over 30 of his Mutual and Essanay comedies) stars as the eponymous femme, Marie, a desperate young woman who reckons she has been dumped by her fickle and irresponsible fiancé, Jean (Carl Miller), after he mysteriously stands her up at a railway station, where they were to meet for a couples excursion to Paris together.
