Not in a thousand years could I articulate what makes this such an absorbing and affecting fantasy. I could mention a few shots—the peephole cover!—or the Peter-Gabriel-ass score, but that wouldn’t by any means suffice to explain why it had me so near to tears from the jump. It’s a little embarrassing how many otherwise grown-ass cinephiles admire this movie. An inverted spectacle of gigantic hollows and anticlimaxes; a 150-minute Refusal of the Call; a rebuke to the visual and thematic flimsiness of so much big-budget PG-13 sci-fi; dim but not grimdark. Won Liz over after 20 minutes despite the fantasy bullshit. I, who hate Chosen One narratives and terms like “chrysknife” even more than she does, held out till about the hour mark. Villeneuve has a primal eye for geometries, narrative and visual. I’ve never read the book and couldn’t make one bit of sense of the politicking. Loved the Baron, though: everything about him. Stellaaaaaaan! This was a good watch!
