Admittedly not a film I was super excited to see. The trailers didn't excite me, I'm not the biggest fan of Jon M. Chu, and the press tour for this was pretty insufferable. That said, I'm really happy to report that I thoroughly enjoyed this! It has the full wedding cake treatment, it's a fantastic time at the movies.

Wicked has so much heart, humour, and humanity. I'm not familiar with the book or the play but I was really into it. That silent dance between Elphaba and Glinda in the club actually brought tears to my eyes—not something I expected to happen out of this. And that became my favourite part of the whole film. The film is energetic and colourful, with the spectacular sets and performances doing a lot of the heavy lifting for Jon M. Chu's bland direction. For all the colours and sets, this is one really flat-looking movie. Cynthia Erivo is a talent and has a wonderful voice, Jonathan Bailey brings a charming presence to the screen (how can someone be that attractive!?), and Ariana Grande easily steals the show. Is an Oscar nomination on Grande's horizon? Possibly!

For all the drama surrounding this film, it's pretty great that it manages to make you mostly forget about it while watching it—except for whenever Ethan Slater is on screen, lol. He took me out every time, and especially when he said "I would do anything for you" to Glinda.

Wicked is a force of entertainment. A powerful story, incredible performances, and terrific set pieces—run, don't walk to the cinema!
