    Megalopolis

Confusing, messy, contradiction of a film. My question for Coppola is - how can you make a film preaching the importance of progression as a society when Megalopolis clearly shows your own lack of progression? From using the most unsavory bits of Rome’s history (incest and the idea of “a man’s world”) that are clearly choice rather than helping the world in any way. And the continuous sexualization of women - especially female on female for the sake of entertainment.

    ★★★★½

The Substance takes a big bloody swing that accomplishes so much more than just a home run. For the sake of no spoilers - prepare for your jaw to be on the floor.

    Queer

    ★★★★

The cinematography in the film - fantastic! Each shot is perfectly orchestrated and rich with detail. However, the film occasionally uses A.I. (*computer animation*) for some of its scenery that I found to be very distracting compared to what cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom can accomplish practically.

Lastly, chapters one and three of Queer are hypnotic, beautiful and surreal. Highlighting Luca Guadagnino’s originality and style. But chapter two looses sight and fails to progress or contribute much to the overall themes of Queer. And yet - the film still works in a way that makes Queer a unique experience I’d recommend for others to check out.

    Gladiator II

    ★★½

Gladiator 2 is a visually striking film but sticks too close to the source material. Barely straying away from the original making the story beats feel reused and less shiny.

    Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

    ★★★★½

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga provides rich context into the character of Furiosa as well as the Mad Max world we only caught glimpses of during Fury Road. With totally different story telling and pacing, Furiosa becomes the ultimate double feature with Fury Road. The two amplify each other - intertwining story with heart racing action.

    Babylon

    ★★★★½

Damien Chazelle’s 3 hour epic Babylon will have you wondering: is this a love letter to cinema or a hit piece?
As so many people know, working on set can be a shit show! But at the end of the day, we always come back loving being a small part of the magic we are creating. Babylon captures both of these sides in the most ambitious and cocaine filled way possible. Not so surprising, it really worked for me!
