“It’s not about the journey. It’s the destination.”
Note: I’m writing my review for The Brutalist post-Election Day, and its themes are resonating more with me.
The Brutalist is a juggernaut of a film. Venice’s Silver Lion winner, Brady Corbet, crafted a staggering American epic that will stand the test of time, and while many have already used the word “masterpiece” to describe The Brutalist, experiencing it affirms it as such.
Pablo Larraín’s Maria is the cinematic equivalent of watching a bright flame slowly, quietly lose its spark – until it is suddenly snuffed out. For me, Maria is a tragic, heartbreaking tale of what it means to live, love, and obsess over legacy – how, even in death, our shadows are used to fulfill expectations. The film pierced through my soul and shattered my heart. I felt each of Angelina…
“You deserve to have someone love you for the beautiful, neurotic mess that you are.”
Heart Eyes is entertaining enough. It doesn’t revolutionize slashers, but its Valentine’s Day backdrop makes for a refreshing setting. Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding are very compelling as our leads, and their chemistry propels the story forward. It’s pretty good for roughly two-thirds of the film but it unravels into an incoherent mess by the end. With each reveal, it becomes more and more frustrating, culminating in a lackluster, underwhelming finale that almost sinks the whole. Still, I had fun, and for that, I must give it some credit.
“Magic mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?”
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a beautiful classic — the princess of princesses. It is stunning that this exists! Some scenes in it viscerally remind me of watching when I was younger, and they immediately take me back. For a brief moment, I felt like a kid again — the magic of movies!
I cannot wait to see Rachel Zegler take on this iconic role.
Tasked with the impossible mission of reviving interest in the declining Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America: Brave New World fails as a standalone and tentpole blockbuster. Ironically, the quote above captures the film’s place in the wider MCU: Brave New World is one forgettable, expendable piece in the larger scheme to revitalize the MCU.
As a staunch defender of Marvel and the genius team behind the MCU, I was really rooting for…
“We here to become human again, to put on nice clothes and dance around and enjoy the things that are not in our reality.”
Sing Sing floored me. I haven’t experienced such a wide range of emotions while watching a movie in a long time — excitement, happiness, joy, sadness, frustration, anger, and more. I cried a whole lot. The fact Sing Sing is on the cusp of potentially missing out on Oscar nominations is absurd to me. In a…
