A wealthy family meets for the annual Christmas party at the matriarch of the clan's house. None of them seem to like each other much, but it's tradition. One thing they all seem to have in common is their opinion of the Christmas punch. Something doesn't taste right, but they drink it anyway. What they don't know is that someone spiked the punch with a military-grade drug that turns those who ingest it into crazed homicidal lunatics.
In the first fifteen minutes or so, all I could think was how this film tries way too hard to be funny, and while it succeeds a few times, it mostly fell flat. What I didn't initially realize is that, while this film is labeled as horror, it is actually a black comedy flick. I found myself having a good time and a ton of fun as Secret Santa quickly grew on me. Sure, there's lots of corny-looking CGI blood, but there are also gallons of the physical stuff too, and the many kills are varied enough to kick more than enough ass. Overall, this film boils down to ninety minutes of murder, blood, guts, and a high body count. Add on the characters roasting each other as they commit heinous killings, and I couldn't help but have a great time with this ridiculous little gem.
What else should I have expected from the same director as Jason Goes to Hell?
