Douwe Peters’s review published on Letterboxd:
“Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”
Oppenheimer is the perfect blend of everything Christopher Nolan has ever done. This is a monumental masterpiece not only for him but for cinema in general. Oppenheimer is the best biopic ever created and is unbelievably captivating, thrilling and psychological.
Oppenheimer also contains the best script Nolan has ever written. The dialogue is airtight, there is humor, irony but most importantly the way Nolan tells the story of Oppenheimer is so unique and so interesting to watch it’s incredible. Nolan uses different timelines in different orders but still the film pushes forward with impeccable pace and drive almost so forceful that it almost lost me during the long hearing sequence, but I think that was the point because it makes the following scene by Emily Blunt one of the most powerful scenes in recent memory. This script is a marvel but has one error. The language they claim to be Dutch is definitely not dutch. Also very interesting how that error can be made while Hoytema is half dutch.
The production level is magestic. I have to start with the score. I don’t think there is something Ludwig Goransson can’t do. I will not be surprised if this score brings him his second Oscar already. It is so unbelievably good. The use of the violin representing Oppenheimers mood, the sound of radiation, the declining sweeping notes and his amazing way around the synths make this score outstanding. I had problems with Tenet’s soundmixing but Oppenheimer blows these out of the water. The sounddesign and mixing are perfect. Hoyte van Hoytema delivers incredible work again with beautiful cinematography in perfect IMAX. And please watch this film in IMAX let no one tell you, you’re just looking at close-ups. The editing by Jennifer Lame is outstanding and creates perfect pacing, disorientation and cohesion.
The cast is simply perfect. This is a career defining performance by Cillian Murphy. He makes you feel like you are in his head, feeling his emotions/struggles while never sympathizing with him. It’s remarkable. Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt are amazing aswell and the rest of the cast just owns their limited screentime.
Oppenheimer is an outstanding piece of cinema and career defining achievement by Christopher Nolan that I think should be nominated for literally everyting at the Oscars and I think it will. Nolan’s vision, precisive directing and creative choices with this film are what make this a masterpiece. The pacing, the structure, the visuals and the black/white and color perspectives create a unique experience that leaves everything to the viewer and makes you think about our future as a species, now you know the horrors of the past.
