I wish the TSA uniform were sexier, but that's my only major gripe about Carry On. This is a fun, entertaining action movie that delivers much more than I expected after watching the trailer. Taron Egerton is engaging as always and plays an excellent action hero. His eyes and brow do a lot of the heavy lifting in the scenes with little dialogue.

This is a film that is destined to be reappraised...

On the surface, this seems like an odd setting for a musical—a salt mine in a post-apocalyptic world, but it worked for me. I'm glad we don't know why the country is in a Civil War or which side is bad (it clearly is Ron Swanson's). If we got the why, the film would have probably ballooned to two and a half hours. I really didn't care because that was not the voyage Alex Garland wanted to take us on. If his decision feels toothless, that's your prerogative. It didn't feel that way to me. I'm glad we see all the action from…

Two and a half hours later…

    More, please.

This is precisely how to adapt a Broadway musical. John Chu understands that theatre and film have different rhythms, and you can’t jump from one song to another every two to five minutes. It can get exhausting. Sure, fans of the music will be in heaven, especially with the likes of Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, and Jonathan Bailey belting out said songs, but the story doesn’t get enough room to breathe. For…
